Sikkim flash flood

Gangtok, Oct 22: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang made his way to Chungthang, a full 19 days after a dam burst triggered a devastating flash flood. His visit aimed to assess the extensive damage caused by the flood, particularly at the Teesta Stage III dam and the Teesta basin.

During his visit, the Chief Minister also engaged with the residents of Chungthang and reviewed the distribution of relief to the affected families. Tamang was welcomed by Lachen Mangan MLA Samdup Lepcha, as well as Ratan Singh Sonal, Commandant of the 11th Battalion of ITBP, Mangan District Magistrate HK Chettri, and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Chungthang Kiran Thatal. Rural Development Minister Sonam Lama from Gangtok accompanied the Chief Minister.

For those unfamiliar with the situation, Sikkim, a hilly state, was struck by a destructive flash flood on October 3, resulting in extensive damage. Overflowing river and lake waters inundated key routes, severing the state’s connection with the rest of the country. The disaster has resulted in more than 70 reported deaths and left several others missing.

In the midst of this crisis, security forces have been working tirelessly to restore routes and reopen highways that had been closed due to the flooding.
