Introducing Community Notes to India by Elon Musk’s X: Here’s How to Get Started

1. Elon Musk’s X introduces Community Notes to India, providing users with a tool to verify information.
2. Musk has consistently lauded the Community Notes feature for its role in ensuring factual accuracy.
3. This addition comes as India gears up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, starting on April 19.

New Delhi, April 04: Elon Musk’s X introduces Community Notes to India, offering users a tool to fact-check information on the platform.

Elon Musk has long praised the Community Notes feature on X for ensuring users receive accurate information. Now, this feature is available in India, arriving just as the country gears up for Lok Sabha elections starting on April 19.

X announced the launch of Community Notes in India on social media, welcoming new contributors to join the initiative. Elon Musk himself shared the news, emphasizing the feature’s activation in India.

To participate, users can simply click on the link provided by the Community Notes official handle and agree to the specified conditions.

This grants them access to become contributing members of the feature.

Initially introduced by X in December 2022, Community Notes allow users to view notes associated with posts worldwide, with the ability to post such notes gradually expanding to users in select countries. With the latest expansion, contributors from 69 countries are now part of the program.

Last year, X extended Community Notes to include images and videos, enhancing its utility for fact-checking across different types of content.

The introduction of Community Notes in India is significant, especially with the upcoming national elections, as platforms intensify efforts to combat misinformation. However, X has not made any specific announcements regarding its initiatives for the Indian elections.

While Community Notes have proven valuable in fact-checking, they have faced challenges in curbing misinformation entirely. Despite contributors providing context to stories, the spread of misinformation has persisted on the platform.

X has encountered hurdles in the Indian market, including legal disputes with the government over content regulation.

Earlier this year, X complied with orders to withhold certain accounts and posts related to farmers’ protests in India, citing legal challenges against the blocking orders.

In light of India’s stringent social media regulations, Musk emphasized the platform’s commitment to adhering to local laws during a conversation with BBC last year.

2. The seismic event followed a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan the previous day.
3. The earthquake in Taiwan resulted in nine fatalities and over 1,000 injuries.

Tokyo, April 04: On Thursday, Japan experienced a seismic event as an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 struck off the east coast of Honshu, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

This geological activity occurred just one day following a devastating earthquake in Taiwan, which measured 7.4 on the Richter scale, resulting in nine fatalities and over 1,000 injuries.

The earthquake in Japan, occurring at a depth of 32 kilometers (approximately 19.88 miles), added to the region’s recent seismic activity and raised concerns about potential aftershocks and further tremors.

The proximity of these events underscored the seismic vulnerability of the area and the need for continued vigilance and preparedness in earthquake-prone regions.

Authorities in Japan swiftly mobilized response efforts to assess any damages and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.

The timing of the earthquake, coming so soon after the disaster in Taiwan, heightened awareness and prompted enhanced monitoring and response measures to mitigate risks and safeguard communities.

Study Shows Global Life Expectancy Increased by 6.2 Years Since 1990

1. The Lancet study shows global life expectancy has risen by over six years since 1990.
2. India saw an almost eight-year increase in life expectancy during the same period.
3. Reductions in deaths from major causes like diarrhea and respiratory infections contributed to this progress.

New Delhi, April 04: The study published in The Lancet reveals a remarkable increase in global life expectancy by over six years since 1990, with India experiencing an almost eight-year rise during the same period.

Factors Driving Progress

Reductions in deaths from leading causes such as diarrhoea, lower respiratory infections, stroke, and ischemic heart disease are credited to this progress. However, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impeded further advancements.

Regional Progress

  • South Asia: Countries like Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan witnessed substantial gains in life expectancy, largely attributed to declines in deaths from various diseases.
  • Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Oceania: Notably, this super-region saw the largest net gain in life expectancy, primarily due to reductions in chronic respiratory diseases, stroke, lower respiratory infections, and cancer.

Impact of COVID-19

The pandemic reshuffled the leading causes of death globally, with COVID-19 emerging as the second-leading cause. Latin America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa experienced the most significant loss in life expectancy due to the pandemic in 2021.

Disease-Specific Progress

  • Enteric Diseases: Sharp declines in deaths from enteric diseases, including diarrhoea and typhoid, contributed to a notable increase in global life expectancy.
  • Lower Respiratory Infections: Reductions in deaths from lower respiratory infections also significantly added to global life expectancy.

Modi, Mamata to Hold Rallies in North Bengal’s Cooch Behar Seat Today

1. PM Modi and CM Mamata Banerjee to hold back-to-back campaign rallies in Cooch Behar, North Bengal.
2. Both leaders will address voters in a region where BJP has made strides since 2019.
3. This marks the first time in this election cycle for both leaders to address the same constituency.

Cooch Behar, April 04: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee are set to hold consecutive Lok Sabha campaign rallies on Thursday in Cooch Behar, North Bengal, a region where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has gained significant ground since the 2019 elections.

This marks the first instance in this election cycle where both leaders will address voters of the same constituency on the same day.

The constituencies of Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri, all located in North Bengal, are scheduled for polls on April 19, marking the first phase of the seven-phase election in West Bengal.

The BJP managed to capture all three seats from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the 2019 elections.

Notably, two of the victorious candidates, Nisith Pramanik from Cooch Behar and John Barla from Alipurduar, currently serve as Union Ministers of State.

On Thursday, Modi is slated to address a single rally in Cooch Behar, while Banerjee will hold two rallies, as announced by their respective parties on Wednesday night.

In the 2019 elections, the BJP secured 18 out of the state’s 42 Lok Sabha seats, marking a significant electoral feat. In North Bengal alone, the party won seven out of eight seats.

The primary opposition force in the state aims to increase its tally to at least 25 seats this year.

Despite securing only 77 seats in Bengal’s 294-member assembly during the 2021 polls, the BJP managed to clinch 30 out of 54 seats in the eight districts of North Bengal. However, the TMC reclaimed two of these seats in subsequent by-elections.

Banerjee has been actively touring North Bengal districts and engaging with voters since Sunday, particularly after severe storms struck the region.

In response to the Centre’s decision to halt funding for housing projects under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) due to alleged irregularities, Banerjee’s nephew and TMC national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, criticized Modi on Wednesday.

Abhishek demanded a detailed report on the funds allocated to Bengal under PMAY post the 2021 assembly polls, highlighting the impact of inadequate housing on storm-affected residents.

In rebuttal, Bengal BJP’s chief spokesperson, Samik Bhattacharya, defended the Centre’s actions, attributing the halt in funds to taxpayer concerns and alleged corruption during the TMC’s tenure.

Bhattacharya emphasized the public’s support for Modi’s leadership, citing ongoing corruption investigations by federal agencies as evidence of the need for change in governance.

3. In a letter to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Vallabh expresses disillusionment with the party’s course.

New Delhi, April 04: Gourav Vallabh, a prominent Congress spokesperson known for his articulate representation on finance and economy-related matters, announced his resignation from the party, citing a lack of direction within its ranks.

In a letter addressed to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Vallabh expressed his disillusionment with the party’s trajectory, labeling it as ‘directionless.’

He emphasized that his decision stemmed from several factors, including the party’s stance on issues such as the caste census.

Vallabh highlighted his discomfort with what he perceived as the party’s reluctance to prioritize certain crucial matters, such as the caste census, which he deemed essential for addressing social inequalities effectively.

Additionally, he voiced his unease with the party’s approach to cultural issues, stating his unwillingness to partake in what he referred to as ‘anti-Sanatan’ rhetoric.

His resignation comes as a significant blow to the Congress party, given Vallabh’s prominent role as a spokesperson, particularly in discussions related to finance and the economy.

Vallabh’s decision to part ways with the Congress reflects broader concerns about the party’s strategic direction and ideological coherence.

Moving forward, Vallabh’s departure may prompt the Congress to reassess its approach to issues of caste representation, cultural discourse, and overall party direction.
