Agartala, Aug 21: TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Debbarma has raised concerns over severe flooding in Tripura, labeling it as the “heaviest rainfall in 30 years.”

Debbarma highlighted the dire situation, stating that many villages are submerged, with thousands displaced and living in makeshift camps. Roads have been cut off, and landslides have further isolated communities.

Calling for immediate central intervention, he urged both the state government and the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) to step in. The flooding has wreaked havoc on infrastructure, leaving many areas inaccessible.

Debbarma also commended the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) volunteers for their relentless relief efforts despite personal hardships.

He stressed that all programs have been canceled due to the crisis and warned of potential regional consequences, noting that damage to local dams could impact neighboring Bangladesh.

Kohima, Aug 21: The National People’s Party (NPP) of the 17th Chizami Assembly Constituency has voiced serious concerns over the deteriorating Pfutsero-Zhavame road, urging immediate government intervention.

This crucial roadway, which connects Nagaland and Manipur, is a lifeline for the villages of Tsüpfüme, Razeba, Zelome, and Zhavame.

However, the road has been in disrepair for years, with no visible government action, leaving local communities frustrated.

In 2021, after continued neglect by authorities, youths from Razeba in Phek district initiated a crowdfunding effort under the banner “My Road, My Future” to repair a critical 10-kilometer stretch.

Despite their efforts, the road remains in a dire state, causing immense difficulties for the 8,000 residents who depend on it.

The poor condition has severely impacted the local agricultural sector, particularly in areas like Razeba, where farmers struggle to transport their produce to markets.

Although Zhavame is designated as a ‘Vegetable Village’ and Tsüpfüme as a ‘Ground Apple Village,’ the road’s poor condition continues to cause significant financial losses.

The community asserts that the government must be held accountable for these losses, as the road’s condition directly affects their livelihood.

The people of Razeba are demanding their right to a safe and accessible road that is reliable year-round.

The NPP has called on the state government to address this long-standing issue urgently before public patience wears thin.

Agartala, Aug 20: In Tripura, continuous rainfall over the past 48 hours has resulted in seven deaths, two people missing, and approximately 5,607 individuals displaced.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Brijesh Pandey, Secretary of the Revenue Department, reported that the persistent rainfall has caused river levels to rise significantly, leading to widespread flooding.

The most severe rainfall has been recorded in Bagafa (375.8 mm) and Belonia (324.4 mm) in South Tripura District, and Amarpur (307.1 mm) in Gomati District over the last 24 hours.

“South Tripura and Gomati are severely affected,” Pandey noted. “As of 4:00 p.m., the Howrah, Dhalai, Muhuri, and Khowai rivers are flowing above the danger level.”

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha is closely monitoring the situation from New Delhi and will hold a review meeting on the floods this evening upon his return.

The District Administration has set up 183 relief camps to accommodate the 5,607 displaced individuals.

These include 24 camps in West Tripura, 68 in Gomati, 30 in South Tripura, and 39 in Khowai, with additional camps in other districts.

Pandey stated that the District and Sub-Divisional administrations are providing essential services such as food, drinking water, and medical care at these camps. The situation is being overseen by district-level DMs, the Secretary (RR & DM), and the Chief Secretary at the state level.

“SDMs and officers from various departments, including RD (BDOs), Water Resources, Power, PWD, Forest, Police, Fire Service, and Paramilitary Forces, are working tirelessly to manage the flood impact and conduct relief and rescue operations. The extreme rainfall has also caused landslides and road blockades due to fallen trees, which are being cleared regularly,” Pandey explained.

Damage to homes and livestock has been reported, and field assessments are underway to address these issues and provide relief to affected families.

Seven fatalities have been confirmed: one in Khowai, five in South Tripura, and one in Gomati, due to landslides and drowning. Two individuals remain missing, one in Gomati and one in Khowai.

Over 200 teams from SDRF (TSR), NDRF, Civil Defence Volunteers, Aapda Mitra Volunteers, Fire and Emergency Services, Forest, TSECL, PWD (WR), PWD (R&B), and Agriculture departments are actively engaged in relief and rescue operations.

According to the IMD forecast, light to moderate rainfall is expected across all districts of Tripura for the next two days.

A red alert has been issued for South Tripura and an orange alert for the rest of the state.

The apprehended fugitives are Mineshwar Dihingia, an NSCN (U) commander, Arjun Kanda, and Robin Surin. Dihingia was caught in Lekang Gohain, while Kanda and Surin were arrested in Piyong Kachari village.

Kolkata, Aug 20: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to conduct a polygraph test on Sanjoy Roy, the accused in the Kolkata rape and murder case, on Tuesday, August 20.

The test comes after a local court granted permission following a psychoanalysis test conducted on the accused, a civic volunteer who allegedly raped and murdered a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The polygraph test aims to further assess Sanjoy Roy’s involvement in the case. Currently, the CBI has identified him as the sole suspect, although the victim’s parents have claimed that the attack was a gang rape involving multiple people from the hospital.
