A relief camp has been set up to assist affected residents, particularly in Khangabok Village, which has experienced its third flood this year. The nearby river remains dangerously high.

Many farmlands are submerged, and around 15 houses have been displaced. Villagers are awaiting timely support as conditions worsen.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more heavy rain in the coming days. Residents are advised to:

Kathmandu, Aug 23: A tragic accident occurred in Nepal’s Tanahun district on Friday when an Indian passenger bus carrying 40 people plunged into the Marsyangdi river.

The incident claimed 14 lives and left 16 others injured. The bus, bearing the number plate UP (Uttar Pradesh) FT 7623, was traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu when it fell into the river at Aaina Pahara.

Visuals from the site show the bus severely damaged, with its top section ripped off. Rescue operations are underway, led by a team of 45 police personnel headed by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Madhav Paudel from the Armed Police Force Nepal Disaster Management Training School.

The Indian passengers were staying at Majheri Resort in Pokhara and had departed for Kathmandu earlier that morning. The Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner is attempting to determine if any residents of the state were on board.

Nepal’s challenging terrain and extensive river systems make it prone to such disasters. Last month, two buses with around 65 passengers, including seven Indians, fell into the Trishuli river due to a landslide, leading to over 50 presumed deaths.

This latest accident occurred during heavy rainfall on the Madan-Ashrit Highway, further highlighting the dangers of traveling in the region during the monsoon season.

Agartala, Aug 23: In response to the critical flood situation in Tripura’s Gomati district, Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that essential supplies are being air-dropped to the worst-hit areas.

Using MI-17 helicopters, the relief operations are primarily focused on reaching the affected residents of Amarpur and Karbook, who have been severely impacted by the floods.

The state government is closely monitoring the situation, coordinating rescue operations, and providing essential relief and healthcare services to those stranded.

“Our government is fully committed to safeguarding every citizen’s well-being. We’re doing everything possible to manage this crisis and extend support to those in need,” said Chief Minister Saha.

On August 22, Chief Minister Saha visited the shelter at B. R. Ambedkar School in Bordowali to review relief efforts. He assured the displaced families of continued government support during this difficult time.

The Tripura administration has been actively engaged in extensive rescue and relief operations across the flood-affected regions. The State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) in the New Capital Complex remains in constant communication with field teams, ensuring coordinated assistance.

“The administration is fully involved in managing the situation. We’re advising our field workers and officials to maintain their dedicated efforts,” Saha added.

The death toll from the floods has unfortunately risen to 19, with seven more deaths reported in the past 24 hours.

Over 65,000 people have been rendered homeless, and two individuals remain missing, according to the Relief, Rehabilitation, and Disaster Management Department.

Recent heavy rainfall has worsened the crisis, with Tripura receiving significant precipitation on August 22.

Notable rainfall amounts were recorded in South Tripura (Bogafa: 493.6 mm), Sepahijala (Sonamura: 293.4 mm), West Tripura (Agartala: 233 mm), and Gomati (Udaipur: 155 mm). The downpour has led to rivers in six districts—Dhalai, Khowai, South Tripura, West Tripura, North Tripura, and Unakoti—surpassing danger levels.

Landslides have been reported at 2,032 locations, with 1,789 areas cleared and ongoing restoration efforts in the remaining sites.

The government remains focused on immediate relief and long-term recovery in response to the crisis.

According to Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey, continuous heavy rainfall has significantly increased river water levels.

On August 22, Tripura recorded exceptionally high rainfall: South Tripura (Bogafa: 493.6 mm), Sepahijala (Sonamura: 293.4 mm), West Tripura (Agartala: 233 mm), and Gomati (Udaipur: 155 mm).

Pandey noted that the entire state is severely affected, especially Gomati, South Tripura, Unakoti, and West Tripura Districts. This unprecedented situation is being monitored at the highest levels.

Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha reviewed the relief efforts with senior officials, coordinating with central agencies like MHA, NDMA, Air Force, and NDRF. Relief camps have been set up for 65,400 people, and 450 camps are operational.

The river levels are above the danger mark in several districts. The flood has led to 14 confirmed deaths, with two missing, and six additional deaths reported due to a landslide in the South District.

The flood has damaged infrastructure: 844 broken poles, 151 damaged transformers, and 310 km of conductors. Landslides have affected 2,032 locations, with 1,789 cleared. Restoration is ongoing, with 153 dozers and 200 field engineers working tirelessly.

Transportation has been disrupted, with bus and rail services affected. Preliminary estimates indicate significant crop damage, with 5,000 ha of vegetables and 120,000 ha of paddy fields submerged.

The state has deployed 26 SDRF teams, 4 NDRF teams, and over 2,000 volunteers for rescue operations. The Indian government has provided two helicopters for airlifting stranded individuals and delivering aid.

The IMD forecasts continued heavy rainfall and has issued a red alert for the state today and for four districts tomorrow.

Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP and Left parties of instigating the vandalism and attempting to tamper with evidence in the case.

The victim, a trainee doctor, was found raped and murdered in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9.

However, on August 13, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI, citing “serious lapses” in the hospital’s administration and lack of progress in the investigation.

In response, Mamata Banerjee led a massive rally in Kolkata on August 17, demanding justice and capital punishment for the accused, a civic volunteer associated with the police.

The landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall in Ashwini Tripura village, struck early this morning and led to the tragic deaths of two families. Rescue teams have so far recovered six bodies, with efforts ongoing to retrieve the final victim.

The deceased have been identified as Umacharan Tripura (25), Mandira Tripura (23), Prasenjit Tripura (21), Ajay Tripura (16), Rakesh Tripura (18), Jyotika Tripura (21), and Kumtuisa Tripura (3).

Residents and authorities are working together in the recovery efforts, while injured family members are receiving medical treatment.

An injured survivor shared that the landslide occurred suddenly late last night, burying the house.

The state has already recorded 10 deaths as the floods continue to wreak havoc.
