Imphal, Nov 08: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh asserted that the state cannot welcome illegal immigrants under the pretense of inclusiveness.

He emphasized the need to protect the rights of indigenous communities and acknowledged the sacrifices made by Manipur’s people to secure a stable future.

Addressing a gathering at a school event in Imphal, Singh remarked, “Manipur is in a transitional phase. Many have endured hardships, with thousands displaced and living in relief camps. To safeguard future generations, a strong commitment is required from all political leaders.”

Singh highlighted that all 34 government-recognized tribes in Manipur, including Thadou, Hmar, Gangte, Tangkhul, Mao, and Maram, hold indigenous status.

He noted that, while inclusivity is valued, the state cannot accommodate outsiders or illegal immigrants without risking the well-being of local communities.

He further emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “nation-first” approach and urged citizens to adopt it.

Singh also mentioned the upcoming release of a “Know Your Manipur” general knowledge book by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and expressed satisfaction with the progress in education, noting healthy competition between government and private schools as beneficial for the state.

Guwahati, Nov 06: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed a police investigation into alleged irregular job appointments by MP Rakibul Hussain during the Congress era.

In a press briefing on Wednesday, November 6, Sarma expressed concerns over Hussain’s purported unauthorized issuance of government job appointment letters.

“This is a serious issue. Ministers have no authority to offer jobs, yet Rakibul Hussain openly admitted to distributing appointment letters,” he stated.

Sarma highlighted that rumors of backdoor job appointments during Hussain’s tenure as Home Minister have circulated in Assam for years.

“There has long been suspicion that, as Home Minister, Rakibul Hussain issued appointment letters through non-transparent means,” Sarma added.

Drawing comparisons to former Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) chairman Rakesh Pal—who was jailed for illegal recruitment—Sarma noted, “We knew Rakesh Pal was involved in job scams and even served jail time, but Hussain’s role only came to light with his recent admission.”

The Chief Minister confirmed that a thorough investigation would be conducted, focusing on uncovering the extent of unauthorized appointments during Hussain’s ministerial term and identifying those who benefited from the alleged backdoor hiring practices.

Imphal, Nov 06: Manipur Police have arrested two individuals for allegedly spreading false rumors of an assault case involving the theft of 500 chicks on social media.

The incident arose from a video circulating online depicting people dressed in black supposedly stealing chicks in Phubala. Following an investigation, Manipur Police confirmed the video was staged.

The accused, Iphamayum Ramijuddin, 30, and Heibokmayum Thoiba, 29, from Kwakta Ward No. 8, were identified as the creators of the hoax.

Ramijuddin allegedly confessed to fabricating the incident, while Thoiba recorded and shared the video. Both individuals are now in custody, and legal actions are underway.

In response to the misinformation, security forces launched extensive search operations across Manipur’s hill and valley regions on November 4, recovering a large cache of weapons and explosives in Tengnoupal District’s Samukom area.

Seized items included two pistols, multiple Pompis, ammunition, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), grenades, and communication equipment. Authorities are investigating these items’ origin and potential use, emphasising the region’s ongoing security challenges.

To maintain order and safeguard essential supply routes, security forces escorted 153 vehicles carrying essential goods along NH-37 and NH-2.

Additionally, 111 checkpoints were established across various districts due to heightened security, leading to the detention of six individuals for suspected violations.

These measures underscore the state’s commitment to stability amid rising tensions.

Border Security Force (BSF) personnel noticed the group attempting to cross into India at Jalkumba village, leading to their arrest.

Sabroom Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nityananda Sarkar said, “Five people—three Indians and two Bangladeshi nationals—were detained for illegally crossing the border. An FIR has been filed at Sabroom police station.”

Sarkar added that the three Indian nationals had traveled to Bangladesh to visit a close relative but became stranded due to regional unrest.

He ordered immediate road carpeting on the busy Damthang to Rabongla stretch, emphasizing the role of safe, well-maintained roads in supporting tourism and easing local travel.

Guwahati, Nov 04: A recent study by Columbia University has revealed that arsenic exposure in drinking water may greatly increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, even at levels below the 10 μg/L regulatory limit.

This is particularly alarming for Assam, where arsenic contamination in groundwater has been a long-standing issue affecting large populations.

Data from the Central Ground Water Board shows arsenic levels exceeding the safety threshold of 0.01 mg/L across 19 districts in Assam, including Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat.

The findings are crucial, as they show heart disease risks linked to arsenic exposure as low as 5 μg/L, which is half the regulatory limit in India. Dr. Tamorish Kole from the International Federation for Emergency Medicine explains that even minimal exposure can heighten ischemic heart disease risks, particularly among women exposed for a decade or more.

Arsenic’s health impacts have traditionally been associated with cancers, but this study highlights serious cardiovascular risks. Arsenic exposure can lead to oxidative stress, inflammation, and vascular damage, all of which contribute to heart disease over time.

Arsenic contamination isn’t limited to Assam. Other states like Bihar, Punjab, and West Bengal also struggle with this issue, affecting nearly 24 lakh people in rural areas according to the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. West Bengal, in particular, has the highest number of affected regions.

In response, a Parliamentary Committee report chaired by BJP MP Vivek Thakur has urged the prioritization of research to eliminate arsenic, fluoride, and heavy metals from groundwater.

The report stresses collaboration among the Departments of Science and Technology, Health Research, and Higher Education to develop solutions and promote safe water sources in affected regions.

These efforts could greatly benefit Assam and other arsenic-affected states, as millions relying on groundwater face serious health risks.

Immediate measures, such as public awareness campaigns, arsenic filtration systems, and alternative water sources, are essential.

With this study underscoring the link between arsenic exposure and heart disease, a unified approach involving researchers, policymakers, and local communities is critical to addressing this health crisis and safeguarding public health.

Imphal, Nov 03: Manipur police have successfully arrested five cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) (KCP-PWG) in Charangpat Mayai Leikai, Thoubal district.

The individuals apprehended include:

  1. Thokchom Bikram Singh (29)
  2. Sinam Bijen Singh (37)
  3. Thangjam Deepak Singh (30)
  4. Lambamayum Naobi Singh (26)
  5. Huiningsumbam Ton Singh (21)

These suspects are alleged to have participated in various criminal activities, including abduction and extortion.

During the operation, police seized significant items, including:

  • One 36 HE hand grenade
  • Two demand letters from KCP-PWG
  • Five mobile phones
  • Thirteen SIM cards
  • One four-wheeler vehicle

The investigation is ongoing to determine the full scope of the group’s activities.

On November 2, Manipur Police also apprehended a member of the People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK-PRO) in Kumbi, Bishnupur District.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Nongmaithem Gunamani (also known as Allu), is linked to multiple extortion incidents. Items seized during this arrest included a hand grenade, a two-wheeler, and a mobile phone.

In light of ongoing security concerns, joint operations by police and security forces have been intensified in vulnerable hill and valley districts.

These operations include extensive searches and area control measures to combat insurgency threats and maintain stability.

Authorities have also ensured the safe passage of 309 vehicles carrying essential supplies along Manipur’s major highways, National Highways 37 and 2, under heightened security.

Additionally, a network of 110 checkpoints (Nakas) has been established across various districts, both in hill and valley regions.

As part of the security operations, nine individuals were detained for alleged violations, reflecting the state’s commitment to maintaining order and ensuring resident safety amid rising tensions.

Running until November 9, this celebration marks a significant milestone in Assam’s cultural history. State ministers will spearhead inaugural events across districts, highlighting the importance of Assamese and regional languages in the state’s cultural identity.

Highlights of the celebration include a mix of online and offline activities, including the release of a special booklet documenting the Assamese language’s historical significance dating back to the 4th century. Ayodhya, Oct 31: Ayodhya has achieved a remarkable milestone by lighting 2.5 million (25 lakh) diyas along the banks of the Saryu River, setting a new Guinness World Record during the city’s Deepotsav celebrations.

At the eighth edition of Deepotsav held on Wednesday, two Guinness World Records were established: one for the most people performing ‘aarti’ simultaneously and another for the largest display of oil lamps.

Pravin Patel, the Guinness World Records adjudicator, along with consultant Nischal Bharot, confirmed the records during a press conference.

He announced, “With a total of 1,121 participants, you are the Guinness World Records title holder for most people performing diya rotations simultaneously. Congratulations!”

Regarding the second record, Patel stated, “With 2,512,585 diyas, you are the new Guinness World Records title holder for the largest display of oil lamps!” He expressed his delight in verifying not one, but two records, noting that the “most people performing diya rotations (aarti) simultaneously” was a brand-new record.

The previous record for the largest display of oil lamps was set at 2,223,676 during last year’s Deepotsav. Patel emphasized the importance of adhering to guidelines, stating that the organizers had successfully met all requirements for both records.

Deepotsav, celebrated a day before Diwali since 2017, features the lighting of diyas and takes place along the Saryu River in this sacred town, believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram.

The UP government noted that various contributors—including teachers and students from Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, local organizations, saints, public representatives, and the tourism and culture ministry—played a significant role in achieving this record.

The milestone was verified through drone calculations, and upon receiving the official certificate, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated Ayodhya and the state on this momentous accomplishment.

The scale of Deepotsav has expanded significantly over the years, starting with 171,000 diyas in 2017, and growing to 2.2 million in 2023.

This year’s record of over 2.5 million diyas symbolizes the state’s prosperity and pride under the Yogi government.

Agartala, Oct 31: A cyber crime police station will soon be established in Tripura to effectively address cyber-related cases, announced DGP Amitabh Ranjan.

In a press briefing, Ranjan noted that insurgency is now a closed chapter for the state following the mass surrender of NLFT and ATTF militants. “The Chief Minister wants the state police to focus on community policing and law and order monitoring. We also need to effectively tackle urban crime and urban extremism,” he stated.

To equip the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), which previously focused on insurgency, the state government plans to provide specialist training to address emerging challenges.

“We will push for specialized training for TSR personnel to enhance their skills. TSR jawans will receive training alongside forces such as the NSG and CISF,” he explained.

Ranjan emphasized that steps are being taken to strengthen the capabilities of the state police force with support from central schemes for modernization.

Additionally, the DGP mentioned that six companies of TSR will be deployed to Maharashtra and Jharkhand for election-related duties.

“The Centre requested 15 companies for election duties in these states, but we have agreed to send six companies due to the current situation in Tripura. The TSR companies will leave the state after Diwali,” he confirmed.
