Imphal, Nov 11: At least 11 armed militants and one CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) personnel were killed in a fierce clash at Jakuradhor Karong in Borobekra Subdivision, Jiribam district, this afternoon.

The violent confrontation took place between security forces and militants operating in the region.

The CRPF, in coordination with other security agencies, had been conducting operations in response to reports of militant activity in the area. The encounter resulted in intense gunfire, which led to multiple casualties.

In response to the violence, authorities have heightened security measures in Jiribam district to prevent further escalation. Additional forces have been deployed to maintain peace and ensure the safety of the local population.

In another related incident, a farmer in Manipur’s Imphal East district was injured when militants opened fire from hilltop positions on Monday morning.

This attack is the third consecutive day of violence against farmers in the Imphal Valley. The ongoing assaults are severely affecting the harvesting of paddy crops, with many farmers in peripheral areas now too fearful to work in the fields.

The latest attack took place in the Yaingangpokpi Shantikhongban area, where militants from nearby Kangpokpi district fired at farmers, injuring one with pellet shots.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the unrest continues to disrupt daily life.

Guwahati, Nov 11: The Assam government is set to release the second installment of its ‘Nijut Moina’ scheme on November 11, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on his social media platform X.

Reaffirming the state’s dedication to the well-being of girls, CM Sarma shared that Rs 18.39 crore will be directly transferred to the bank accounts of over 1.6 lakh girl students.

Praising the scheme’s goals of discouraging child marriage and supporting higher education, he wrote, “Committed to our daughters’ well-being! Today, our girls will receive the second installment of #NijutMoina Asoni.”

Aimed at girls from Class 11 through post-graduation, the ‘Nijut Moina’ scheme was introduced by CM Sarma with Cabinet approval and a Rs 1,500 crore budget.

This monthly financial support benefits female students in government and government-aided institutions.

The Arunachal delegation includes Minister Dasanglu Pul, representing as a Woman Delegate, Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyigyor, and Chau Zingnu Namchoom, HMLA, as Observers.

Imphal, Nov 11: In a series of search operations and area dominance exercises across vulnerable regions in both hill and valley districts of Manipur, security forces uncovered a significant cache of weapons and ammunition.

The recovered arsenal includes four 12-bore single-barrel rifles, a locally manufactured 7.62 mm rifle, a .303 rifle, three locally crafted ‘Pompi’ firearms, and a Lathode gun.

Additionally, two AK-47 magazines and 40 rounds of live ammunition were seized, indicating considerable hidden firepower in the area. The team also found three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and two communication handsets with a single charger.

Among other seized items were two country-made 9mm pistols with a magazine, a .22 rifle with a magazine, and a locally crafted launcher, also known as a “Pompi”.

Authorities confiscated a .36 high-explosive grenade, six live rounds, 27 empty shell casings, and one empty Lathode case.

Further discoveries included two smoke grenades, five tear gas shells, a “BAOFENG” communication handset, a pistol holster, two bulletproof jackets with a BP plate and a pair of jungle boots. These items were found specifically in the Utangpokpi Hill area of the Kakching district.

Jitu Goswami recounted the incident, stating that stone-throwing from the house of ex-Congress councillor Ismail Hussain escalated to gunfire, targeting his vehicle.

Although unharmed, Goswami expressed concern for colleagues, one critically injured, and urged police action.

Congress leader Rakibul Hussain countered, alleging the BJP incited unrest to influence the elections.

Serious allegations have been raised against TSI Shankar Das of Tinsukia Sadar Police Station for alleged excessive force during the protest.

Both student unions, representing the Moran and Motok communities, have demanded immediate disciplinary action against Das.

Organized by the Tawang Cycling Association under Dr. Dukhum Magu and backed by the Department of Tourism, Arunachal Pradesh, this year’s event is part of the Asia Enduro Series (AES) and has attracted bikers from eight countries along with top riders from across India.

The event kicked off at Tawang Walkthrough Market, with Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering and Tawang Brigade Commander Brigadier VS Rajput flagging off the race.

This challenging course begins at a breathtaking 14,400 feet altitude and descends to 8,000 feet, establishing Monduro 4.0 as one of the world’s most demanding high-altitude biking events.

Among the participants are renowned enduro bikers, including 2024 UCI World Champion Alex Rudeau from France and Nepal’s downhill champion Neerav Shrestha.

Speaking at the launch, MLA Tsering welcomed the racers and thanked Chief Minister Pema Khandu and the Tawang Cycling Association for boosting Tawang’s global adventure tourism profile.

Brigadier VS Rajput and association member Dawa extended words of encouragement, highlighting the event’s role in promoting sportsmanship.

To help participants adapt to the high altitude, practice sessions are scheduled for November 10 and 11, with the final race on November 13 and 14.

Monduro 4.0 is expected to once again spotlight Tawang’s unique natural beauty and rich culture, drawing global attention to this remarkable region of Arunachal Pradesh.

Guwahati, Nov 09: In Assam, the opposition Congress party has urged the Election Commission to install CCTV cameras and deploy central paramilitary forces in sensitive polling booths to ensure free and fair by-elections in the state.

In a letter addressed to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, Congress alleged that the ruling BJP was creating a climate of fear among voters by issuing threats, leading to concerns about booth capturing and rigging.

The by-elections are scheduled to take place on November 13 in the Dholai, Sidli, Bongaigaon, Samaguri, and Behali assembly constituencies.

According to Congress, “The goons and supporters of the ruling party have instilled fear among common voters through acts of vandalism and intimidation, which is harmful to the integrity of the election process. Many polling booths are highly sensitive, and there is a real possibility of booth capturing and rigging by the ruling party.”

The letter, signed by state Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah, leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia, and the party’s special observer for Assam Vikas Upadhyay, also mentioned that several party leaders, including MLAs, had reported incidents of poll-related violence.

Despite multiple FIRs and complaints being filed, Congress claimed that the police and civil administration had failed to take preventive action.

The Congress also raised concerns about the transfer of five police officers in the Nagaon district, alleging that this move was in violation of the law and might indicate an attempt to influence the elections. The Samaguri seat, which is currently held by Congress, is located in Nagaon.

Congress has demanded the installation of sufficient CCTV cameras and increased security by deploying paramilitary forces at polling booths to safeguard the election process.

Additionally, they requested that voters, polling agents, and officials be prohibited from entering polling booths with mobile phones.

The party also called for the reinstatement of police officers to their original postings, claiming that their transfers were unlawful and done without permission from the Election Commission.

Congress is contesting all five seats in the by-elections, while the ruling BJP has fielded candidates in three constituencies, with its allies AGP and UPPL contesting in one each.

Of the five constituencies, four are held by the ruling coalition and one by Congress.

South Eastern Railway authorities confirmed that the 22850 Secunderabad-Shalimar Weekly Express was passing through Nalpur station in the Kharagpur Division when the derailment happened. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities or serious injuries reported.

Shilling, Nov 09: As the indefinite hunger strike and protest by North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) students entered its fourth day, faculty members called on Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar to step in and help resolve the crisis.

The protests involving nearly 5,000 students have disrupted operations across the campus. Students have been staging a hunger strike outside the office of NEHU Vice-Chancellor PS Shukla, demanding his removal along with the ouster of the registrar and deputy registrar, among other officials. As part of the demonstration, students also burned effigies of these officials.

Prof. Lakhon Kma, president of the North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), reported that faculty members met with Governor Vijayashankar to brief him on the unrest.

In response, the Governor, who serves as the chief rector of NEHU, expressed concern over the students’ protests and urged them to return to their classes. He further directed faculty and staff to submit recommendations to help resolve the standoff.

Prof. Kma highlighted the deep-seated loss of confidence in Vice-Chancellor Shukla’s leadership, with students, teachers, and non-teaching staff united in demanding his removal.

One of the students’ main demands is the appointment of a Pro Vice-Chancellor for NEHU’s Tura campus. Addressing this, VC Shukla announced plans to appoint a Pro VC for both the Tura and Shillong campuses by the end of the month, according to university ordinances.

Vice-Chancellor Shukla also directly appealed to the students, asking them to engage in dialogue to resolve the issue. “I earnestly request the students, through the media, to end the hunger strike and work with us on solutions. Without dialogue, my hands are tied,” he stated, expressing concern for their health.

The tension at NEHU arose from unaddressed demands made by the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), which included the removal of top officials, the appointment of a Pro VC in Tura, and the timely conduct of PGSU elections.

As the protests intensified, students declared a complete lockdown of the university campus.
