Shillong, Oct 31: A striking contrast in air quality between two cities in Meghalaya underscores the growing environmental challenges facing the northeastern state.

Shillong, renowned for its clean air, stands in stark contrast to Byrnihat, which is just 75 kilometers away and ranks among the most polluted areas in India.

Recent measurements from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reveal that Byrnihat recorded a hazardous Air Quality Index (AQI) of 276, while Shillong continues to enjoy significantly cleaner air.

This discrepancy highlights the adverse effects of rapid industrialization in Byrnihat’s industrial belt.

The pollution crisis in Byrnihat escalated last month when authorities closed six industrial units following inspections led by Forest and Environment Principal Secretary Sampath Kumar.

These facilities were found to be operating with PM2.5 levels nearly double the permissible limits and were lacking the required pollution monitoring equipment.

The closed units had repeatedly disregarded directives from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board regarding emissions control. They failed to monitor critical pollutants such as PM10, PM2.5, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.

In contrast, Shillong is now listed alongside Ramanathapuram (Tamil Nadu) and Nalbari (Assam) as one of India’s cities with the cleanest air.

This creates a complex challenge for Meghalaya’s environmental authorities, who must strive to maintain Shillong’s pristine air quality while simultaneously addressing the industrial pollution crisis in Byrnihat.

Other major urban centers in India are also grappling with poor air quality.

Delhi has reported an AQI of 268, and neighboring cities such as Gurugram and Ghaziabad are experiencing similarly poor air quality levels, which pose significant health risks to their residents.

Guwahati, Oct 31: As Diwali and Chhath Puja approach, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) is enhancing safety measures across India’s railway network to ensure a secure journey for millions of travelers during this peak season.

Anticipating a surge in passenger numbers, the RPF launched an intensive safety campaign on October 15, 2024, aiming for an incident-free festive season.

To mitigate fire risks and other hazards, the RPF is conducting thorough luggage inspections, scrutinizing parcels, and clamping down on unsafe practices, such as portable stoves used by vendors.

The campaign includes public awareness efforts, with RPF personnel distributing safety leaflets, displaying posters, organizing street plays, and sharing safety messages through social, print, and electronic media.

The initiative has already resulted in 56 bookings under the Railway Act for hazardous materials and penalties for over 550 passengers smoking on trains.

Additionally, 2,414 individuals have faced action under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) as part of this effort to enforce railway safety.

Passengers are advised to:

  • Report any suspicious items or activities, especially flammable objects or firecrackers, to RPF/GRP staff.
  • Keep valuables secure, limit baggage, and prefer digital transactions.
  • Ensure children are supervised, stay alert to station announcements, and follow instructions from railway staff.

Key Security Measures:

  • Increased CCTV surveillance at major stations.

This move, as per the Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines, aims to streamline the electoral process and encourage broader voter participation across the state.

The Draft Electoral Rolls are accessible to the public, political party representatives, and registered voters at the offices of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), as well as on the CEO’s official website, ceomanipur.nic.in.

Nationally and regionally recognized political parties will receive a complimentary printed copy of the rolls, with additional copies and DVD-ROMs available for purchase.

According to the draft, Manipur’s gender ratio has seen a minor rise, now at 1069, compared to 1068 in January 2024.

However, the Elector Population Ratio dropped to 54.84% from 55.54% in the previous rolls. The total number of electors is now 2,034,660, a net increase of 8,037 voters, while polling stations remain at 2,955.

The Special Summary Revision (SSR) process begins today, allowing citizens to register, update, or remove their names. Claims and objections are open from October 29 to November 28, with special campaign days on November 9 and 10. The final electoral roll will be published on January 6, 2025.

To engage youth, the CEO will lead awareness campaigns in schools and universities, activate Electoral Literacy Clubs, and organize camps for voter registration.

CEO Pradeep Kumar Jha also launched the “Eikhoi Voter Challasi” campaign, deploying mobile vans with electoral information to enhance inclusiveness.

He urged eligible citizens to participate actively: “Your voice matters. Ensure your name is on the electoral rolls.”

“After receiving the ticket, I was abandoned by the party, and the President, instead of supporting my campaign, was away at an award function in Nepal,” Bhandari alleged.
