Meghalaya’s lone COVID-19 positive patient dies:

Guwahati, April 15: Meghalaya’s lone COVID-19 positive patient, a 69-year-old doctor died early on Wednesday.

He passed away at Bethany Hospital in Shillong.

Confirming the report, Meghalaya Health minister AL Hek said that, the patient – a senior doctor of the state passed away at around 2 am.

“We have already sealed the Bethany Hospital and all other patients, doctors, nurses and other health workers of the hospital are being quarantined,” The Meghalaya Health minister said.

The 69-year-old senior doctor of Bethany Hospital was tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday.

This is the second death case due to COVID-19 in North East.

Earlier, a COVID-19 positive patient from Assam’s Hailakandi district died and now Meghalaya’s COVID-19 patient died.

A total of 40 positive cases for COVID-19 have been reported in the North-Eastern region so far and two patients from Assam and Meghalaya died and the first patient from Manipur was discharged from the hospital and she was recovered from the dreaded virus.

Guwahati, April 14: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday urged the people of Assam to follow the lockdown extension call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi till May 3 in order to contain coronavirus in the country and emphasized on strictly adhering to social distancing norms so that COVID-19 spread can be totally controlled during this lockdown extension period.

Appreciating the people of Assam for observing 21-day national lockdown, the Assam Chief Minister said that, it is very crucial hours and everybody should have to follow the lockdown extension.

Urging the people of the state not to take the lockdown measures lightly, Sonowal warned that any negligence to maintain lockdown would seriously impact the government’s efforts to prevent the outbreak and break the chain of spread.

Saying that Assam’s people have shown tremendous resilience and discipline till now against COVID-19 and many Assamese people were stuck at different places of the county and abroad during this festive season of Rongali Bihu, he urged these people to patiently wait for the situation to improve and bad times to pass so that they can unite with their family members again while defeating this deadly virus.

“It is important for them to stay wherever they are to ensure the safety of themselves and their loved ones. The state government was fully prepared to handle any steep rise in the number of patients in the coming days and he assured that the help of the people the state government would be able to overcome this challenge posed by COVID-19,” Sonowal said.

Appreciating the roles played by the health department, food and civil supplies department, police, safai Karmi, ANM, Asha Karmi, MPWs, etc. in containing Coronavirus outbreak in Assam, Sonowal thanked Prime Minister Modi’s swift and decisive action which has resulted in country’s better performance in this fight against the deadly virus.

He also underlined the need to maintain hygiene practices like hand wash and social distancing norms to control Coronavirus as no cure or vaccine has been found against the virus till now.

The Assam Chief Minister Sonowal spent the first day of the Assamese New Year with the homeless people in Dibrugarh and served food to them.

He appealed the people to help out those in distress during these difficult times and said that the state government was also taking steps to provide food items to the poor and marginalized sections of the society.

Coronavirus lockdown: People of Assam celebrating ‘quarantine’ Rongali Bihu.

Guwahati, April 14: Rongali Bihu celebrated in Assam during Lockdown. Amidst the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the people of Assam are celebrating ‘quarantined’ Rongali Bihu.

Following directives of the government, the people of Assam have boycotted mass gatherings, all public cultural activities and are celebrating the biggest festival of the state indoor.

Assam’s biggest festival Rongali Bihu – also known as Bohag Bihu has been celebrated with restraints this time amid lockdown and COVID-19 crisis in the state.

The people across the state have observed the first day of Rongali Bihu – known as Goru Bihu in accordance with tradition by maintaining social distancing norms.

The week-long Bihu celebrations in Assam which start with Goru Bihu and the people – The day of Sankranti dedicated to livestock and today is Manuh (People’s) Bihu – the Assamese calendar year is started from this day.

People have a special maah halodhi (black gram and turmeric paste) bath, put on new clothes and light chaki at Gohai Ghor (the household prayer place) and the Manuh Bihu involves the tradition of seeking blessings from the elders in a family and presenting the ceremonial patch of Bihuwan or the Gamusa cloth, as a gift, to be worn as a symbol of cultural pride of the Assamese people.

In Guwahati, Assam police personnel were also seen celebrating Rongali Bihu on the streets by beating Dhol, singing Bihu songs.

The police personnel have also celebrated the biggest festival of Assam at different police stations in the state by maintaining social distancing norms.

Assam police have urged the people of the state to celebrate Bihu at home.

26-year-old Mizo woman tested positive for COVID-19 in Mumbai:

Guwahati, April 14: A 26-year-old woman from Mizoram was tested positive for COVID-19 in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Mizoram Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo said that, the woman hailing from Mizoram was tested positive for COVID-19 at a hospital in Mumbai.

The Mizoram Chief Secretary also said that, she is being treated at a hospital in Mumbai.

According to the reports, the woman was in the capital city of Maharashtra since February.

On March 25, a 50-year-old man from Mizoram’s capital city Aizawl was tested positive for the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) at Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

A total of 39 positive cases for COVID-19 have been reported in the North-Eastern region so far and one patient from Assam died and the first patient from Manipur was discharged from the hospital and she was recovered from the dreaded virus.

Guwahati, April 13: After Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram another NE state Meghalaya has also extended the ongoing Coronavirus lockdown till April 30.

The Meghalaya cabinet on Monday decided to extend the ongoing lockdown in the state till April 30.

The cabinet meeting chaired by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had also decided that, inter-state movement remains restricted and all inter-state entry and exit points will continue to be remained sealed throughout Meghalaya.

Meghalaya Government extends lockdown.

The Meghalaya cabinet also decided to provide one-time financial assistance of Rs 3000 to each citizen from Meghalaya both students and working individuals numbering about 3000 individuals in total, stranded in different parts of the country due to lockdown.

Earlier, the Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram governments had decided to extend the ongoing lockdown in the states till April 30.

Meghalaya reports its first COVID-19 positive case.

Guwahati, April 13: First COVID-19 positive case in Meghalaya reported on Monday after a Shillong based doctor tested positive for COVID-19.

Confirming the report, the Meghalaya Chief Secretary said in a press release that – “One doctor from Bethany hospital, Shillong has been tested COVID-19 positive on Monday.”

“All residents of the state who may have visited Bethany hospital on or after March 22 are requested to immediately register themselves by calling 108 or visiting the link of http://meghalayaonline.gov.in/covid/login.htm,” the Meghalaya Chief Secretary said in the press release.

On the other hand, Meghalaya Health minister AL Hek said that, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has already directed the state Health department to ensure that, no patient, doctors, nurses and other health workers from the particular hospital where the doctor was working come out from the hospital premises.

The Meghalaya government has turned the hospital located at Shillong into a quarantine camp.

The Meghalaya Health minister also said that, his department is now trying to find out all persons who were in contact with the doctor.

With the fresh COVID-19 positive case, a total of 38 positive cases for COVID-19 have been detected in the North-Eastern region including 30 cases from Assam, two each from Manipur and Tripura and one each from Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Meghalaya.

On the other hand, East Khasi Hills district magistrate has imposed 48-hour curfew in the Shillong agglomeration area from 6 am of April 14 except essential service.

The District Administration, Mon stated that since the COVID 19 situation is rapidly evolving, constant vigilance is need of the hour. Assam, our immediate neighbor, has reported 29th confirmed COVID-19 cases (as on 12th April 2020) and we cannot ignore the danger that is looming right at our doorstep, he stated.

The adoption of the strategy of Active Case Search and contact tracing can significantly supplement the other preventive and control measures aimed at reducing the spread of the disease. Many districts are reporting nil or relatively small number of confirmed cases across the country. We have zero confirmed cases in our district, he stated however, this should not make us complacent. The best way to find undiagnosed cases is when a large fraction of the population is diagnosed and tested to prevent them from infecting anyone else. This will help break the chain of transmission.

The Mon District Administration is following a graded response approach to prevent and contain COVID-19 in the district. We will be contacting the Active Case Search exercise throughout Mon district from 13th April to 17th April 2020, the notification stated.

Mon District Administration mentioned that, the Village or Ward will be divided into units of fifty households which will be surveyed by 1 (one) team comprising of two members known as the Active Case Search Group. Anganwadi Workers/ASHAs/ANMs/Teachers/ NGOs/Volunteers etc. are envisaged to be part a part of the team. The Active Case Search Group shall conduct house to house inquiry and fill up the relevant format for the following persons: (i) Who have travel history outside the state during the past 90 days (ii) Who have had contact with COVID-19 infected persons. (iii) Any members in the family having symptoms such as fever, cough, difficulty in breathing or having hypertension/ diabetes/ asthma or any other chronic illness. (iv) Who are above 60 years old, and (v) Pregnant women.

If one is tested positive for COVID-19, the next step would be Contact Tracing. It is the process of identifying, assessing and managing people who have been exposed to the person confirmed positive for COVID-19. This is critical to prevent transmission. The contacts with whom he/she interacted would be traced and will be kept under observation for a period of 28 (twenty-eight) days (Home/Institutional Quarantine). The aim is to map the contacts to determine the potential spread of the disease.

The notification appealed to the citizens of Mon District to co-operate and provide necessary information to the survey teams.

COVID-19 Bio-safety Labaratory in Nagaland. BSL level 3 at Naga Hospital Authority, Kohima, NHAK and BSL level 2 at the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research, CIHSR, Dimapur.

Informing this, Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, Kesonyu Yhome said the first consignment of materials required for the BSL lab will be arriving in the state tomorrow.

Yhome along with the first consignments, technicians will be coming where work will begin in full swing.

He said five medical personnel from the State have completed training at Indian Medical Research Centre, Dibrugarh on the functioning of the labs and they would return tomorrow.

On the first day of Rongali Bihu – the cattle are washed, smeared with a paste of fresh turmeric, black lentil, etc while people sing to them – “Lao Kha, bengena kha, bosore bosore barhi ja, maar xoru, baper xoru, toi hobi bor bor goru (Eat gourd, eat brinjal, grow from year to year, your mother is small, your father is small, but you be a large one)” and the people of Assam have also worshipped the cattle.

But this time, the people of the state have celebrated the Goru Bihu just like a tradition by maintaining all lockdown rules.

50-year-old Prabudh Bora – a resident of Kampur area in Assam’s Nagaon district said that, in the wake of the novel Coronavirus outbreak, the people of Assam today celebrated the Goru Bihu just as a tradition.

“If the situation would not change, then the people would celebrate the Bihu with joy and enthusiasm. But this time we are celebrating the Bihu just like a tradition. We are following the lockdown orders,” Prabudh Bora said.

On the other hand, many Bihu celebration committees of the state have canceled all their cultural and public functions one of the reasons why lockdown breaks Rongali Bihu celebration mood among people.

In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Assam government has appealed the people and Bihu committees of the state to celebrate the Bihu on by hoisting the Bihu flags with a maximum of five people.

The state government has also urged the people to maintain lockdown rules and celebrate the Bihu in their homes with family members.
