The touching scene unfolded at Kuthari Najan LP School, polling station number 226 in the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency.

Despite challenges posed by age and mobility, the elderly woman exemplified the essence of participatory democracy as she made her way to the ballot box in a wheelchair. Her determination resonated with onlookers, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement regardless of circumstances.

Accompanied by her family, who brought several specially-abled senior citizens to the polling station in wheelchairs, the centenarian’s presence highlighted the significance of accessibility and inclusivity in the electoral process.

Imphal, April 19: The first phase of polling in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district began at 7:00 am with empty polling stations as the Kuki-Zo community abstained from voting, following a call from their apex body.

Despite the deserted polling stations, voters from other communities exercised their franchise rights, albeit with significantly lower turnout compared to previous elections.

The Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills, the paramount authority for the Kuki community, issued a proclamation urging all Kuki residents in Sadar Hills to abstain from voting in the Lok Sabha Election, citing their unified stance.

Clarifying that their approach isn’t a boycott but rather a deliberate abstention, the apex body expressed disappointment over the absence of a Kuki-Zo candidate in the 18th Lok Sabha Election.

Efforts to select a consensus candidate among the four candidates in the outer Manipur PC were unsuccessful, leading to the decision to abstain from voting, supported by stakeholders and endorsed by various Kuki bodies in the district.

The directive was further reinforced by instructions to village chiefs and individuals to adhere to the joint resolution of abstaining from voting.

Itanagar, April 19: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju exercised their democratic rights on Friday, casting their votes in their respective native villages as the polling for two Lok Sabha seats and 50 assembly constituencies commenced, officials confirmed.

Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu stands in the queue for his turn to vote in the Tawang constituency. He has already won Uncontested from Mukto Assembly Seat.

Today voters of Arunachal Pradesh are voting for both the General Elections 2024 and the State Assembly Election too. 

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein also participated in the electoral process in his village within the Chowkham assembly segment.

Rijiju cast his vote in Nafra, his village situated in the newly formed Bichom district, while Khandu exercised his franchise in the Mukto constituency located in Tawang district.

Khandu and Mein are among the ten BJP candidates who secured uncontested victories in the 60-member assembly.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the democratic process, Khandu took to social media, urging all eligible voters to actively participate in the elections.

Mein echoed the sentiment, sharing a photo after casting his vote and calling upon all voters to exercise their adult franchise.

He particularly encouraged first-time voters to partake in the vibrant democratic process, emphasizing its importance in electing representatives for both the state legislative assembly and Lok Sabha.

Despite incessant rain, the spirit of the electorate remained undeterred as queues formed outside polling stations across the northeastern state. The elections encompass two Lok Sabha seats and 50 assembly constituencies.

Approximately 8,92,694 voters, including 4,54,256 women, are eligible to cast their votes, determining the fate of 133 candidates in the assembly polls and 14 contestants in the Lok Sabha polls.

In the Arunachal West parliamentary seat, eight candidates are vying for victory, including Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju and state Congress president Nabam Tuki.

Similarly, six candidates, including sitting BJP MP Tapir Gao and state Congress vice president Bosiram Siram, are contesting from the Arunachal East.

Elaborate security measures have been put in place by state election authorities to ensure peaceful polling. Seventy companies of central armed police forces (CAPF), alongside India Reserve Battalion and state police personnel, have been deployed, as confirmed by state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Pawan Kumar Sain.

The counting of votes for the assembly elections is scheduled for June 2, while the results of the Lok Sabha polls will be announced on June 4.

Clashes Disrupt Voting in West Bengal During Lok Sabha Election

Kolkata, April 19: The Lok Sabha election in West Bengal’s first phase was marred by clashes between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as voting commenced for three out of the state’s 42 seats at 7 am on Friday.

Incidents of violence erupted almost immediately, with clashes reported between supporters of the two parties in areas such as Chandmari near Cooch Behar town, where at least one person was injured. Stone-throwing incidents were also documented.

Anant Barman, a local TMC functionary, was hospitalized following an alleged crude bomb attack at Bhetaguri. State minister Udayan Guha visited Barman in the hospital.

In the previous 2019 elections, the BJP secured victories in all three seats—Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri—that were part of the first phase. By 9 am, voting percentages stood at 15.2% in Cooch Behar, 15.91% in Alipurduar, and 14.13% in Jalpaiguri.

Both the TMC and BJP levied accusations against each other, citing voter intimidation, obstruction of polling booth access, and assaults on booth agents. In areas like Toofanganj in Cooch Behar and Dabgram-Fulbari in Jalpaiguri, incidents of temporary election office arson were reported.

According to an official from the West Bengal governor’s office, the majority of complaints regarding poll violence and voter intimidation originated from Cooch Behar.

The region has a history of electoral violence, with five casualties, including a first-time voter, during the April 2021 assembly elections in Cooch Behar. Additionally, clashes have erupted between supporters of Union Minister Nisith Pramanik and State Minister Udayan Guha.

In response to the unrest, the BJP established a helpline at its Kolkata office to address complaints of poll violence.

TMC functionaries noted that the party’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, was overseeing voting proceedings from Kolkata.

Manipur’s First Phase of Lok Sabha Elections Ensures Adequate Precautions

Imphal, April 19: The voting process in both the Lok Sabha Elections in Manipur started at 7 am on Friday. Election in Manipur starts at 7 am and will continue till 4 pm.

All 32 Assembly constituencies in Inner Manipur and 15 Assembly constituencies in Outer Manipur (ST) constituencies went to polls on Friday.

A complete of 15,44,652 electors, along with 7, 41,849 male, 8,02,557 female and 246 transgender, are expected to exercise their franchise in the first phase.

There are a total of 2107 polling stations, including four P-3 polling stations and 96 P-2 polling stations.

Some 645 polling stations were manned by female polling officers and two polling stations were manned by all disabled polling officers.

Additionally, 85 polling stations have been set up for internal voters in Manipur Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Tubal, Kakchin, Churachandpur and Kangpokpi.

A total of 18,091 local voters will exercise their right to vote in their ballot boxes. While he contested from Manipur Assembly constituencies, four candidates contested from Outer Manipur (ST) constituencies.

Security was ensured by the deployment of Central Armed Police forces at all polling stations.

Provisions for pick up and drop facilities for PwDs and aged electors have also been made available along with wheelchair facilities.

A total of 11,582 disabled voters and 289 centenarian voters will exercise their right to vote. There are two volunteers at each ballot box to assist voters.

Polling stations were set up and Local Health Workers (ASHA) were deployed at all polling stations to provide emergency medical care to voters. Anganwadi workers help pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. First aid kits are also available at all polling stations.

The strength of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) can be monitored with the help of the e-Traccar application installed on the mobile phones of all voting staff and officers.

Use of cellular phones, cordless phones are not allowed.Campaign-related posters or advertisements are not allowed within 100 meters of the election centers. Candidates are also asked not to set up polling stations within 200 meters of polling places.
Use of loudspeakers within the 100 metre is strictly prohibited.

The citizens were requested to produce their Election photograph identity Card (EPIC) for identity at the polling stations before casting their votes.

The voters who will no longer be able to produce EPIC were asked to supply one of the 12 alternative identity documents for establishing their identity.
