Students appeal Centre to adopt measures against China

Arunachal Pradesh: Politicians, students’ body appeal Centre to adopt measures against China

June 19: The current state of disturbance in the Galwan Valley region in Ladakh after the intemperate face-off between Indian Army and China’s People’s Liberation Army on Monday has instigated the people, politicians and the leading students’ body of Arunachal Pradesh to appeal to the centre to take precautionary steps against China.

They have condemned China for the intense clash. They have urged the Centre to take measures to “thwart the evil designs of Beijing“.

Arunachal Pradesh and China share a border of length 3,488-km. China claims the state as its part as a result of the territorial part of Tibet which it occupied in 1951. However, as per the McMahon Line (1938), the northeastern state falls in India and has an Indian governing body over it.

This was the deadliest clash since the 1967 Sino-Indian clash.

A lot of people from Upper Siang said, “We are indigenous Arunachalees and greet each other with Jai Hind. We are not only true Indians but also serve as sentinels of the frontiers.“

They appealed to the centre to adopt measures for the uncalled intrusion by Chinese troops.

BJP MP Tapir Gao said, “Patriotic Arunachalees have been reacting very strongly against the inhuman acts of China.“

He requested immediate precautionary action in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim along with the Arunachal Pradesh border.

He added that Communist China is renowned in the committee of nations for their acts of treachery. China is not trustworthy and has the potential to deceive any moment.

Gao said, “Urgent steps must be taken to thwart the evil designs of Beijing.”

According to the minister, the villages around the border will have to face the intruders and outsiders will not be able to manage the internal security due to the mountain terrain.

Alo Libang, a Congressman who is representative of 34 Tuting-Yingkiong constituency said, “Arunachal Pradesh shares its border with Bhutan, China and Myanmar and the PLA makes repeated incursions into the state. Home guards would be very successful in collecting intelligence in the border villages.”

The Chinese troops had set their foot into the district of Upper Siang and reached a village nearby in December 2017. However, the Indian army men had intercepted them by the banks of the river Siang.

Libang expressed his vehemence in condemnation of China by calling for a socio-economic boycott.

AAPSU president Hawa Bagang said, “The Chinese have a history of breaking trusts for their selfish gains.” Hence, the appeals to the centre voice out from every corner of the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a message to China, stated that if instigated, India will not shy away from retaliating and will protect its territorial integrity.

Assam CM directs Guwahati city police to arrest Garga Chatterjee for offensive remarks against Ahoms

Guwahati, June 19: Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal Friday directed Guwahati Police Commissioner to arrest Kolkata based political commentator Garga Chatterjee and bring to Assam for posting offensive remarks on social media about Swargadeo Chaolung Sukaphaa and Ahom community.

Sarbananda Sonowal directed the City Police Commissioner to leave for Kolkata today itself for apprehending Garga Chatterjee.

The Assam Chief Minister said that Chaolung Sukaphaa was the architect of the greater Assamese identity and making derogatory statements about such a great personality could not be tolerated.

“Posting of offensive remarks on social media misinterpreting historical facts could lead to a rift between different communities in an ethnically diverse state like Assam. The derogatory statements had hurt the sentiments of Assamese people and he underlined the need to take legal action against offenders like these for discouraging such behaviours in future,” Sonowal said.

On June 17, Garga Chatterjee tweeted – “Why does @sarbanandsonwal regularly celebrate a Chinese invader and his invading army? Why does banned separatist group ULFA also celebrate the Chinese invader? Do real Indians know that Indian tax money is being used by BJP in Assam to put up statues of a Chinese invader?”

He also tweeted on June 18 – “Why do uncivilized Chinese love terrorist Paresh Barua of ULFA so much? What is the special relationship between Chinese & Barua? What is the special relationship between China & ULFA? What is common between these anti-Indian forces? Bengalis know bcoz we fought British, ULFA didn’t.”

Chaolung Sukaphaa, also called Siu-Ka-Pha, the first Ahom king in medieval Assam, was the founder of the Ahom kingdom and the kingdom existed nearly 600 years.

In remembrance the glorious contributions of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha, the Assam government celebrates ‘Assam Divas’ on December 2 every year.

Following the controversial statements made by Garga Chatterjee, an Assam youth Bhaskar Gogoi had complained Garga Chatterjee and alleged that he called Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha as Chinese invader and tried to malign the Assam state BJP with banned outfit ULFA.

On the other hand, following the direction of the Assam Chief Minister a three-member team led by DCP (Crime) Barun Purkayastha has been ordered by Guwahati Commissioner of Police to leave for Kolkata tonight.

A case related to this has been registered in the Crime Branch of Assam Police against Garga Chatterjee along with four other such cases for making provocative statements.

Indo-China Standoff details you need to know

Indo-China Standoff: All the details you need to know

June 15 India: Indo-China Standoff; Details you need to know.

A violent clash between Indian and Chinese troops which occurred at Ladakh’s Galwan Valley on June 15 killed 20 Indian jawans including the commanding officer of the 16 Bihar Regiment, Colonel B. Santosh Babu.

While Colonel Babu and two other officers died on spot, the 17 other soldiers succumbed to injuries the day after.

This was by far the most dangerous clash since 1967, when both parties had clashed at the Nathu La border area.

For more than 40 decades since 1967, although standoffs have taken place along the disputed border area, they have never resulted in such fatal clashes.

Tensions between the two countries had been escalating since the beginning of May this year, when the two forces clashed at Pangong Tso in Ladakh on May 5th. And again on 10th May, a face-off took place at the Muguthang Valley in Sikkim.

On 21st May, Chinese troops entered the Galwan Valley on the pretext of objecting to the construction of an Indian road. On May 24th Chinese troops set up camps at Hot Springs, Patrolling Point 14 and Patrolling Point 15.

The Indian side claims that Chinese troops had been constructing “structures” on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

On June 6 military officials from both sides reached an agreement to de-escalate tensions.

The matter took a serious turn when on June 15 Indian troops headed by Colonel Babu went to patrol PP14 to check whether Chinese troops had moved back from the LAC as per the June 6 agreement.

Although Chinese troops were minimised along the PP14, seeing two small tents and observation posts in the area, Indian troops demolished those. It is then that the fatal clash occurred.

Chinese troops confronting their Indian counterparts initiated the clash with nail studded iron rods and the Indian troops countered. The Indian Army wasn’t heavily armed following agreements signed in 1993, 1996 and others.

“In case of contingencies or other problems arising in the areas along the line of actual control, the two sides shall deal with them through meetings and friendly consultations between border personnel of the two countries. The form of such meetings and channels of communications between the border personnel shall be mutually agreed upon by the two sides.” states the September 7, 1993 agreement.

It further states, “Both sides shall work out through consultations effective confidence-building measures in the areas along the line of actual control. Neither side will undertake specified levels of military exercises in mutually identified zones. Each side shall give the other prior notification of military exercises of specified levels near the line of actual control permitted under this Agreement.”

Another agreement signed in 1996 states “Neither side shall open fire, cause bio-degradation, use hazardous chemicals, conduct blast operations or hunt with guns or explosives within two kilometres from the line of actual control. This prohibition shall not apply to routine firing activities in small arms firing ranges.”

“If the border personnel of the two sides come in a face-to-face situation due to differences on the alignment of the line of actual control or any other reason, they shall exercise self-restraint and take all necessary steps to avoid an escalation of the situation. Both sides shall also enter into immediate consultations through diplomatic and/or other available channels to review the situation and prevent any escalation of tension.” It further states.

Although shots were not fired from either side maintaining agreements signed in the past, there were casualties on both sides resulting from physical fights. The clash continued for several hours from 15th evening past midnight. 18 Indian soldiers were heavily injured and are undergoing treatment while 58 had minor injuries.

According to intelligence sources, more than 40 casualties have happened on the Chinese side although China has sought to keep silent on it.

In the clashes, 10 Indian soldiers including 4 officers had been captivated by the Chinese PLA. Following the June 15 clashes, Leh based 3 Infantry Division Commander Major General Abhijit Bapat led negotiations with his Chinese counterparts for the de-escalating of the ongoing tensions along the LAC. Following it, the 10 soldiers were also released. However, Bejing has said in a press conference that China has not captured any Indian soldiers.
