Assam on High Alert due to rise in COVID-19 cases

Assam on high alert after 27 COVID-19 positive cases detected in the last 72 hours:

Guwahati, May 16: Assam on High Alert due to a rise in COVID-19 cases. Assam on high alert after 27 positive cases for COVID-19 has been detected in the state in the last 72 hours.

All cases have been detected in Guwahati and the administration of Kamrup (Metro) district has declared several areas in the capital city of Assam as containment zone.

On Saturday, two more positive cases for COVID-19 has detected in Guwahati.

Both case has related to an earlier COVID-19 patient of Fancy Bazar area in Guwahati.

Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, among the two new cases one is a barber and another is a handcart puller.

With the new cases, the state tally is now increased to 91.

He tweeted – “2 more persons, related to Aloo Godam case, test #COVID19 + in Guwahati. Total cases 91.”

On Friday, three COVID-19 positive cases were detected in the city including one case was detected at Sarusajai stadium quarantine camp and one is an indoor patient of Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) and another had migrated to West Bengal.

Assam has so far reported 91 COVID-19 positive cases including 34 cases from Kamrup (Metro), 11 cases from Cachar district, nine cases from Golaghat district, six cases each from Morigaon, Goalpara districts, five cases each from Dhubri, Bongaigaon districts, four cases from Nalbari district, three cases from Jorhat district, two cases each from Karimganj and Kamrup districts and one each from South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Hailakandi and Kokrajhar district.

Out of them two COVID-19 patients died and 41 others were discharged from hospitals and the state has now 44 active COVID-19 positive cases.

Assam reports three more COVID-19 positive cases, state tally increases to 89:

Guwahati, May 15: Assam on Friday has reported three more positive cases for COVID-19, with these new cases state tally increases to 89.

The new cases have been reported from Guwahati in Kamrup (Metro) district.

Confirming the reports, Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, one case has been detected at Sarusajai stadium quarantine camp and one is an indoor patient of Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) and another has migrated to West Bengal.

“3 persons tested #COVID19 + in Kamrup Metro. One person is from Sarusajai Quarantine camp, 1 indoor patient of GMCH, & one has migrated to West Bengal. Total cases 89,” he tweeted.

25 COVID-19 positive cases have been detected in Guwahati in the last 48 hours.

On Thursday, seven cancer, heart patients, and attendees who came from Mumbai have been tested positive for COVID-19 in Guwahati.

Assam has so far reported 89 COVID-19 positive cases including 32 cases from Kamrup (Metro), 11 cases from Cachar district, nine cases from Golaghat district, six cases each from Morigaon, Goalpara districts, five cases each from Dhubri, Bongaigaon districts, four cases from Nalbari district, three cases from Jorhat district, two cases each from Karimganj and Kamrup districts and one each from South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Hailakandi and Kokrajhar district.

Out of them two COVID-19 patients died and 41 others were discharged from hospitals.

The state has now 44 active COVID-19 positive cases.

On the other hand, one more COVID-19 positive case has detected in Manipur and the state tally has increased to 4.

Wanted drugs mafia injured in police firing in Assam:

Guwahati, May 15: A wanted drugs mafia was injured in police firing incident in Assam, Nagaon district on Friday.

The injured man was identified as Arzul Ali and he was allegedly selling drugs for the past several months.

The incident took place at the Borbazar area in Nagaon town where the injured drugs mafia had attacked a police personnel deployed at the area and tried to snatch his service revolver also.

When the police personnel traced his illegal activities in the area, the drugs mafia attacked the police personnel.

The drugs mafia tried to run away from the area before a police team reached the spot and the police team ordered him to stop.

The police team fired upon the drugs mafia after he didn’t follow police orders.

A police official of Nagaon district said that, the drugs mafia had attacked a police personnel and also tried to snatch his service weapon.

The injured man was admitted at Nagaon civil hospital.

Assam BJP leader arrested for attempting to rape a woman in Hojai district:

Guwahati, May 15: Police on Friday had arrested a BJP leader of Hojai district in Assam for allegedly attempting to rape a woman.

The accused person was identified as Kamrul Hoque Choudhury and he was the president of BJP’s Minority Morcha of Hojai district.

A case (no 219/2020) has been registered at Lanka police station in the central Assam district under section 376/511/506 of IPC.

Assam BJP leader arrested for attempting to rape

Hojai district Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Suman Chakraborty said that a lady under Lanka police station had lodged a complaint where she stated that, on May 11, the accused person had tried to rape her at his residence.

“The complaint stated that, the accused person touched private parts of the woman. Following the complaint, we had registered a case and arrested the accused person today,” the police officer said.

The police produced the accused BJP leader before a local court at Sankardev Nagar in Hojai district on Friday and the court sent him to judicial custody.

On the other hand, following the incident Assam state BJP had suspended the accused person from the party.

In an order copy issued by Assam state BJP said that, Kamrul Hoque Choudhury has been suspended from the primary membership of the party for his involvement in anti-social activities.

Manipur has reported COVID-19 positive case

After 42 days, Manipur reports a fresh COVID-19 positive case:

Guwahati, May 14: After 42 days, Manipur on Thursday has reported a fresh positive case for COVID-19.

T  via Jiribam on Wednesday.

The man was returned from Mumbai where his father was treated for cancer.

He returned to Manipur in a hired vehicle and the administration kept him in a quarantine center.

Dr. Khiorom Sasheekumar Managing, Additional Director and Spokesperson of Manipur Health department said that the 31-year-old person from the Imphal East district who returned from Mumbai with a patient was tested positive for COVID-19.

In a press release issued by the Manipur Health Department stated that the new COVID-19 positive patient is now at COVID-19 treatment block/isolation ward of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal.

Manipur has reported COVID-19 positive case

“As a precautionary arrangement, District Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) and Surveillance Teams have been constituted in all districts including 40 sub-surveillance teams in each district. COVID treatment blocks at JNIMS and RIMS are in readiness,” said in the Manipur Health Department press release.

According to the reports, the new COVID-19 patient’s mother succumbed to COVID-19 during their stay in Mumbai.

The last COVID-19 positive case was detected in Manipur on April 2.

Manipur has so far reported three COVID-19 positive cases and out of the two patients were discharged from hospital after their consecutive test results were found negative.

Fight against COVID-19: Assam women SHGs produce 51.23 lakh masks

Guwahati, May 14: Participating in the fight against the deadly novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) over 10,600 women Self Help Groups ( SHGs ) of Assam produce over 51 lakh face masks.

By setting a strong example of economic resilience in the times of the global pandemic, members of 10,659 women SHGs have produced a total of 51,23,194 face masks in the state so far and out of these, 31,71,314 masks have been sold.

With the brand name of ‘Asomi’, 84 stalls have been opened to sell masks across the state and the women SHGs have earned about Rs 7.15 crore through sale of masks.

The women SHGs have also distributed more than 4 lakh masks free of cost.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday visited the mask-making facilities of women SHGs under National Rural Livelihood Mission, Assam at Tatimara near Chandrapur in Kamrup (Metro) district and took stock of their activities while encouraging them to continue the economic endeavor.

Assam women SHGs produce over 51 lakh masks

The Assam Chief Minister said that, people would need to carry on observing the COVID-19 protocols like wearing masks, maintaining social distancing and frequent hand washing, etc till there is no vaccine for the deadly virus and only strict observance of health department guidelines would ensure containment of the outbreak.

He also said that steps have been taken to bring back the state’s people stranded outside and those returnees must also adhere to COVID-19 protocols.

Myanmar Government hands over 22 wanted insurgents to India:

Imphal, May 15: On the request of India, the Myanmar government hands over 22 wanted insurgents to the Indian government on Friday.
It is the first time that the neighboring country has acted on India’s request to hand over leaders of the northeast insurgent groups.
The insurgents who wanted in Manipur and Assam are being brought back by a special plane.
Before heading to Guwahati, the plane will first make a stopover in Manipur’s capital city Imphal.
The insurgents would likely be handed over to the local police in the two states.
Among the deported by Myanmar are some long-wanted senior insurgent leaders including NDFB (S) self-styled Home Secretary Rajen Daimary, UNLF Captain Sanatomba Ningthoujam, Lt Pashuram Laishram of PREPAK (Pro).
12 of the 22 insurgents are linked to four insurgent groups in Manipur – UNLF, PREPAK (Pro), KYKL, and PLAband the remaining 10 are linked to Assam groups NDFB (S) and KLO.

15,000 pigs have died due to African Swine Fever

African Swine Fever (ASF) disease kills 15,000 domestic pigs in Assam

Guwahati, May 14: Amid the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, another disease has put Assam on high alert after nearly 15,000 domestic pigs in the state have died due to African Swine Fever (ASF).

Out of 33 districts of the state, 10 districts have been badly affected after thousands of domestic pigs have got infected by the disease.

After thousands of domestic pigs died due to the disease, the Assam government has formed a state-level Task Force to deal with the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak.

Assam Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Agriculture Minister Atul Bora said that, 10 districts of the state have been affected and 14,919 pigs have died due to the disease.

“We have taken all possible measures to stop the spread of African Swine Fever. We have already informed the Union government and the center has assured to help us to control the situation. We have also demanded Rs 144 crore from the center to deal with the situation,” Atul Bora said.

The Assam minister also said that, the state government has already formed district level and state level Task Force to deal with the disease.

He also informed that, there are many wild boars in the state and the government is concerned about how to prevent the wild boars from the infection of African Swine Fever (ASF) disease.

“There are around 15,000 wild boars alone in Kaziranga National Park and we have discussed with the state forest department also to take preventive measures. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has also directed the forest department to take all preventive measures,” Atul Bora said.

The Assam minister also said that the adoption of strict biosecurity measures is an option to curb the spread of the disease.

“We have declared containment zones within 1 km radius in the affected districts. The center has asked to go for the culling of pigs affected by the disease and we are discussing it,” Atul Bora said.

The Assam minister further said that, the disease was detected in the state in February last. However, it was started in April 2019 at a village of Xizang province of China bordering Arunachal Pradesh.

As per a 2019 census by the Assam Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, the pig population in Assam was around 21 lakh, but it has increased in recent times to around 30 lakh.

NSCN militants apprehended in Arunachal Pradesh

Two NSCN militants apprehended in Arunachal Pradesh by Indian Army:

Guwahati, May 15: Indian army had apprehended two hardcore militants of NSCN fraction groups along with arms in two separate operations in Arunachal Pradesh.

The troops of Assam Rifles in a joint operation with Arunachal Pradesh police had apprehended a militant of NSCN(KK) near Sankha Havi in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district.

Based on a specific input, the joint team launched an operation in the area and apprehended the militant and he was identified as self styled Corporal Tonlang Pangtha.

The security personnel had recovered one 9 mm pistol with magazine, nine rounds of live ammunition, and one mobile phone in possession from the militant.

Later, the apprehended militant along with recovered items was handed over to Changlang police station for further investigations.

In a separate operation, the Indian army and Arunachal Pradesh police had nabbed a hardcore militant of NSCN (IM) near Longphong village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district.

Guwahati based Defence PRO Lt Col P Khongsai said that, the nabbed NSCN (IM) militant was identified as self-styled Sergeant Major Puman Wangsu andhe was allegedly involved in the assassination of an Ex-MLA of Arunachal Pradesh and 10 other persons last year.

The apprehended militant was handed over to Longding police station for further investigations.

Assam: 7 cancer, heart patients and attendees came from Mumbai tested positive for COVID-19, cases state tally rises to 86

Guwahati, May 14: Assam on Thursday has reported seven more positive cases for COVID-19.

Seven cancer, heart patients, and attendees who came from Mumbai have been tested positive for COVID-19 in Guwahati.

With the new cases the state tally is now surged to 86.

Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, three cancer patients and a 13-year-old heart patient and three attendees who came from Mumbai to recently were tested positive for COVID-19.

He tweeted – “7 patients & attendants who came from Mumbai & now in quarantine tested positive.”

 

Recently, 137 patients and attendees had reached in Guwahati from Mumbai.

Earlier, 15 COVID-19 positive cases were detected in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Assam has reported 86 COVID-19 positive cases including 29 cases from Kamrup (Metro), 11 cases from Cachar district, nine cases from Golaghat district, six cases each from Morigaon, Goalpara districts, five cases each from Dhubri, Bongaigaon districts, four cases from Nalbari district, three cases from Jorhat district, two cases each from Karimganj and Kamrup districts and one each from South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Hailakandi and Kokrajhar district.

Out of them two patients died and 39 others were discharged from hospitals.

One COVID-19 patient was migrated to Bihar.

The state has now 44 active positive cases for COVID-19.
