Assam Prepares for Grade III Recruitment Exam with Over 11 Lakh Candidates Set to Appear

Guwahati, Sept 15: In a major recruitment drive, over 11.23 lakh candidates across Assam will appear for the Grade III examination conducted by the State Level Recruitment Commission (SLRC) this Sunday.

The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), is responsible for organizing the exam, which will begin at 10:30 am in 2,305 centers statewide.

Candidates are required to arrive two hours before the exam’s start. To ensure the smooth conduct of this large-scale exam, more than 70,000 invigilators will be deployed across Assam. In Guwahati alone, 329 centers have been established, each accommodating around 500 candidates.

To prevent any malpractices, especially those related to social media, the Assam government has implemented strict measures, including the suspension of mobile internet, data, and Wi-Fi services from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm on exam day.

This step aims to prevent the spread of misinformation and ensure a fair exam process.

Authorities have urged the public to ignore any misleading information online. Question papers will be stored in secure strong rooms under 24-hour CCTV surveillance, and exam centers without CCTV will have continuous videography to maintain integrity.

To help candidates reach exam centers, district commissioners, along with the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC), have arranged additional bus services for smoother transportation.

Imphal, Sept 15: A bomb exploded at the residence of Manipur Minister Khasim Vashum in Hamleikhong, Ukhrul, on Saturday night.

Vashum, who holds portfolios in Veterinary Animal husbandry and Transport is a prominent member of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), which is allied with the ruling BJP in the state.

The explosion took place around 8:40 p.m. on September 14, as per local police reports.

Fortunately, the minister was not at home when the incident occurred. Ukhrul police swiftly arrived at the site to investigate the blast.

No casualties have been reported, but the explosion has heightened concerns about the safety of political leaders in the region. Authorities are conducting further investigations to uncover the motive behind the attack.

Kohima, Sept 13: An inter-ministerial Central team, led by Anant Kishore Saran, Joint Secretary from the Ministry of Home Affairs, arrived in Nagaland to assess the damage caused by landslides and floods during this year’s monsoon season.

On Wednesday, the team, including officials from the Ministries of Jal Shakti, Road Transport & Highways, Rural Development, and Finance, visited landslide-affected areas in Zunheboto Town.

A joint meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall with the Zunheboto District Disaster Management Authority and various departments.

During the meeting, the district authority and departments presented the challenges faced by affected households and the extent of property damage.

Following the meeting, the Central team conducted on-site assessments in landslide-affected areas, particularly in Alahuto Ward No. 5, Zunheboto Town, where six houses and approach roads were severely damaged due to soil erosion and massive landslides in July.

The team, assisted by local officials including the Deputy Commissioner of Zunheboto, Rahul Bhanudas Mali, and Ward Disaster Management Authority Chairman Vikheshe Aye, inspected the affected areas.

The victims shared their grievances with the Central team, which noted the damages to public properties and assured that remedial measures would be taken to ensure public safety and resolve the landslide crisis.

The confrontation unfolded when a team from the Sonapur Circle office, supported by the police, arrived in the village to enforce a court order evicting individuals who had unlawfully reoccupied land previously cleared of encroachers.

The eviction operation, intended to address long-standing issues of illegal occupation, quickly descended into chaos. Upon arrival, the team was met with a hostile reception from the villagers, armed with sharp weapons, sticks, and stones.

The aggressive response from the mob resulted in significant violence, with the officials and police being targeted in a brutal assault.

During the clash, a magistrate sustained injuries, and over ten police personnel were also injured. The mob’s actions were particularly destructive, causing severe damage to a police vehicle that was on site to support the operation.

The situation escalated rapidly, endangering the safety of the eviction team and the residents.

Faced with a worsening situation and the risk of further violence, the police deemed it necessary to use live ammunition as a last resort. This measure was taken to disperse the mob and restore order, aiming to protect the team and ensure the safety of all involved.

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions related to land encroachment and the complex dynamics between local communities and enforcement agencies.

The authorities have since called for a thorough investigation into the clash and emphasized the need to maintain peace and order during such operations.

In a separate operation in Churachandpur district, police recovered a rocket, modified M-16 rifle, country-made mortars, and bomb launchers during a search and area domination exercise.

To ensure the safe movement of vehicles, 110 checkpoints were set up across Manipur, leading to the detention of five individuals for violations.

Enhanced security measures are in place in vulnerable areas, and convoys are being provided on sensitive routes to facilitate the free flow of essential goods along NH-37 and NH-2.

The UNC claims that these districts were created arbitrarily, without adequate consultation with relevant stakeholders, including Naga bodies.

They argue that this move breached several memoranda and assurances from the Indian government, which had promised no changes without comprehensive stakeholder engagement.

Protests and economic blockades ensued, prompting ten rounds of Tripartite Talks between the Government of Manipur, the UNC, and the central government. Despite various promises, no substantial resolution has been achieved.

In their latest decision, the UNC has threatened to escalate agitation if their demands are not met within the 15-day deadline. They are calling for the rollback of the seven districts to restore the previous administrative structure, aiming to honor existing agreements and promote peace.

Agartala, Sep 12: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha directed officials to expedite the preparation of a memorandum for the final damage assessment from the recent floods that occurred between August 19 and 23.

The aim is to submit the report to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) by the end of the week, according to an official.

The floods, which resulted in 36 fatalities and affected approximately 14 lakh people, have prompted a swift response from the state government.

During a review meeting with all secretaries, Saha stressed the importance of finalizing and dispatching the damage assessment memorandum to the MHA as soon as possible.

Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey announced that the chief minister has ordered prompt ex gratia payments to the families of the deceased and compensation for damaged houses. Compensation has been distributed to 26 of the 36 families affected, with efforts underway to complete the process.

Currently, 3,873 flood-affected individuals are still housed in 67 relief camps, where the district administration is providing essential services, including food, drinking water, and medical aid. Pandey assured that there are no financial constraints hindering restoration work or assistance to affected families.

He confirmed that funding for rehabilitation efforts is available, and financial aid has already begun for those with damaged homes. The chief minister also announced a special package of Rs 564 crore for infrastructure restoration and support for flood-hit individuals.

Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar criticized the state’s handling of the post-flood situation, citing a lack of funds. Speaking at a rally in Sonamura, Sepahijala district, Sarkar described the floods as the worst the state has ever faced and urged the chief minister to seek immediate financial assistance from the Centre.

Sarkar suggested that the chief minister, along with opposition representatives, should visit Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to secure necessary funds for the state.
