Guwahati, April 01: A tragic boat accident occurred along the Assam-Bangladesh border at Alga in Nepur, resulting in the loss of life and the disappearance of two individuals.

The incident occurred during a storm, adding to the severity of the situation. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) immediately launched a rescue operation to locate the missing persons.

The unfortunate incident took place yesterday around 5 pm when a mechanised boat carrying 18 passengers departed from Hatshingimari Kokradanga bound for Alga Char in Nepur.

However, the journey took a tragic turn when the boat encountered a sudden storm near Alga in Nepur, leading to the capsizing of the vessel.

As a result of the accident, three individuals, including two children, were thrown into the turbulent waters of the Brahmaputra River.

Despite the efforts of the remaining passengers to swim to safety, the situation turned dire as the storm intensified.

Residents immediately sprang into action, initiating rescue efforts to locate the missing individuals. Tragically, the body of Shamim Hussain, a 4-year-old boy, was recovered, but due to the absence of medical facilities on the char, he could not be revived.

Currently, Kovad Hussain (65) and Ismail Hussain (8) remain missing, prompting the Hatshingimari SDRF to mobilize rescue operations early this morning.

The efforts are being coordinated with local authorities, including Sukhsar police and the Border Security Force (BSF), to cover a wider area and maximize the chances of locating the missing persons.

In response to the incident, the revenue circle officer of Mankas is expected to arrive shortly to oversee the rescue operations and provide necessary support.

Additionally, Sukhsar police have made arrangements for the post-mortem examination of the deceased child to facilitate the legal process and provide closure to the affected family.

The tragic boat accident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by natural calamities and underscores the importance of swift and coordinated rescue efforts to minimize loss of life and alleviate suffering in such challenging circumstances.

Jalpaiguri, April 01: A devastating norwester swept through north Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Sunday afternoon, claiming at least five lives and leaving around 500 injured.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee promptly cancelled her scheduled engagements and headed to Jalpaiguri to assess the situation. Upon arrival, she visited the Jalpaiguri Super Specialty Hospital to meet with the cyclone-affected individuals.

The storm struck multiple villages, spanning several square kilometers, around 3:30 pm, lasting approximately 10 minutes.

Addressing the media, Mamata Banerjee expressed grief over the disaster, citing extensive damage to houses and the loss of five lives, with two others in critical condition.

She reassured the public that the administration was actively providing necessary assistance and support to the affected communities.

“The administration is on-site, extending all possible help. We are committed to aiding the victims in every way,” she affirmed.

Acknowledging the tragic loss of lives, Mamata Banerjee commended the efforts of the administration in managing the crisis and thanked the medical personnel for their dedicated service.

“The medical teams are working diligently to address the situation. Rescue operations have been swiftly executed,” she added.

Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital received around 170 injured individuals, while approximately 200 were admitted to Maynaguri Hospital and another 100 were receiving treatment at Barnesh health center.

While neighboring districts like Alipurduar and Cooch Behar also experienced similar storms, fortunately, no casualties were reported there.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences for the lives lost in the storm, pledging support to those affected. He directed officials to ensure prompt assistance to the affected individuals.

The storm caused extensive damage to numerous hutments and houses, uprooting trees and knocking down electric poles as strong winds and hail battered the district.

“My thoughts are with those affected by the storms in the Jalpaiguri-Mainaguri areas of West Bengal. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones,” Modi tweeted, urging BJP workers to assist those affected.

Earlier in the day, Shama Parveen, district magistrate of Jalpaiguri, confirmed four casualties. The deceased were identified as Dwijendra Narayan Sarkar (52), Anima Roy (49), Jogen Roy (70), and Samar Roy (64).

Governor CV Ananda Bose is scheduled to visit the affected areas in Jalpaiguri on Monday to assess the situation firsthand.

Airport authorities reported significant damage, particularly to an aged section of the roof in the forecourt area, which gave way under the force of the storm.

This collapse led to rainwater flooding into the terminal, though fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Videos capturing the dramatic scene of the ceiling collapse and subsequent flooding circulated widely on social media platforms, highlighting the extent of the damage caused by the natural disaster.

Passengers bore the brunt of the aftermath, finding themselves stranded amidst the chaos caused by the flooding inside the terminal.

According to the State Emergency Operation Center in Agartala, 37 houses were destroyed, while 125 suffered severe damage, and 454 were partially affected.

The impact was particularly severe in Sepahijala District, where 392 houses bore the brunt of the storm. Jampuijala Sub-division saw 23 houses damaged, Sonamura Sub-division reported 14, and Bishalgarh Sub-division accounted for 355 affected houses.

Beyond Sepahijala, Unakoti District recorded damage to 14 houses, with 124 houses affected in Dhalai District, 21 in West District, 33 in Khowai, 24 in Gomati, and only 8 in South District.

Kolkata, March 31: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a fiery speech on Sunday, ridiculed the BJP’s ambition of winning 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections and threw down the gauntlet, challenging them to secure at least 200 constituencies.

Asserting her stance against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Banerjee declared that its implementation would be prohibited in the state.

She warned people that applying for the CAA would inadvertently label them as foreigners, urging them to refrain from such actions.

Mocking the BJP’s electoral aspirations, Banerjee remarked, “The BJP is saying ‘400 paar’, I challenge them to cross the 200 seats benchmark first. In the 2021 assembly polls, they aimed for 200 plus seats but could only manage to secure 77.”

Addressing her first rally since her recent injury, Banerjee vehemently opposed the CAA and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in West Bengal.

She emphasized that both initiatives were designed to trap legal citizens into foreigner status and vowed to prevent their implementation in the state.

Banerjee also criticized the INDIA alliance partners, CPI(M) and Congress, accusing them of colluding with the BJP in West Bengal.

Dismissing the existence of the INDIA alliance in the state, she accused the CPI(M) and Congress of working in tandem with the BJP.

Highlighting the plight of TMC MP Mahua Moitra, Banerjee condemned her expulsion from the Lok Sabha for her vocal opposition against the BJP.

The airport, serving as a seasonal domestic hub for Gangtok, has restarted its services with flights to two major destinations, Delhi and Kolkata.

However, flights will only operate five days a week, excluding Mondays and Fridays.

The reopening witnessed the arrival of the Delhi-Pakyong commercial flight, bringing in a substantial number of passengers.

Passengers were warmly welcomed by Pakyong Airport Director Rajendra Grover and the airport staff, who provided refreshments including tea and snacks as a gesture of hospitality at the arrival point.

Spanning 201 acres and located approximately 31 km south of Gangtok, Pakyong Airport stands at an elevation of 4,646 ft, making it one of the five highest airports in India.

It holds the distinction of being the first greenfield airport in Northeast India and the sole airport in Sikkim.

Scattered to widespread light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is forecasted to persist in Northeast India, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim until the 5th of the following month.

The Dewanbari Mahila Cluster Behumukhi Samabaya Samity Ltd, led by president Ms. Padma Buli Jamatia, applied for the GI tag for Tripura Pachra-Rignai textile, a traditional attire made by skilled weavers on handlooms.

Pachra, worn as a lower garment by Tripura women, is often paired with a risa, covering the upper body.

Meanwhile, the Peda of Mata Bari, applied for by Matabari Mahila Cluster Level Bahumukhi Samabaya Samity Ltd under president Baby Das, also received the GI tag.
