Imphal, Oct 19: The Blooming Flower Children’s Foundation School in Kalinagar Hmar Veng, Jiribam, was set on fire by unidentified attackers at around 4:10 a.m. on October 18.

Established in 1997 and owned by Rev. Benjamin Shakum, the school has been a beacon of quality education in the region, known for its excellent academic performance. While no casualties were reported, the fire caused extensive damage to the building.

Rev. Shakum expressed his sorrow, stating, “This is more than an attack on a school—it’s an assault on the values of unity and progress that we stand for.”

The arrest comes after the boy mysteriously disappeared during the Durga Puja festivities, sending shockwaves through the community.

Abhimanyu, who lived near the playground of the old Ramkrishna Vidyapeeth School, was reported missing on the ninth day of Durga Puja. Despite frantic search efforts, the tragic discovery of his body on the banks of the Burhidihing River last Monday devastated locals, raising alarm bells across the town.

As the news spread, Margherita’s residents expressed a mixture of grief and outrage, demanding justice for the young boy. “How can a mother do this to her child? It’s beyond comprehension,” a resident said, reflecting the sentiments of a shocked community grappling with the horror of the crime.

Initially, the police launched an exhaustive search operation after a complaint about Abhimanyu’s disappearance was lodged at the Margherita police station on October 11.

However, as the investigation deepened, disturbing revelations surfaced, pointing towards the boy’s mother as the prime suspect in his murder.

Evidence gathered during the inquiry led to Supriya Chakraborty’s arrest, with authorities stating they had significant proof connecting her to the crime.

Chakraborty now faces serious charges under case number 144/2024, including additional legal sections related to the crime.

Her arrest has sparked widespread calls for a thorough investigation, with many demanding strict punishment for such a heinous act.

The community continues to mourn Abhimanyu’s tragic death, as they await further details in this heartbreaking case.

Imphal, Oct 18: A gunfire exchange occurred between two groups in Koutruk village, located in Manipur’s Imphal West district, less than 48 hours after peace talks were held between Meitei and Kuki legislators in Delhi, according to the police.

The incident began when armed assailants from the hills of Kangpokpi district launched an attack on Koutruk village, prompting local volunteers from the town to retaliate.

Following the exchange of fire, security forces were swiftly deployed to the area to restore order. Fortunately, no injuries or property damage were reported, though tensions remained high in the region.

This is not the first time Koutruk village has come under attack. Last month, it endured several gunfire incidents, including a drone bomb attack, adding to the ongoing unrest in the area.

BJP MP Sambit Patra and three MLAs from the Naga community also participated in the two-hour-long discussions, which the Ministry of Home Affairs organized as part of its ongoing efforts to bridge the divide between the two warring communities.

Guwahati, Oct 17: The Supreme Court will pronounce its verdict today, October 17, on petitions challenging Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955.

The judgment comes from a Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, with Justices Surya Kant, MM Sundresh, JB Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra.

The Bench had reserved its judgment in December after four days of hearings.

Section 6A specifically relates to Assam and permits migrants of Indian origin who entered the state between January 1, 1966, and March 25, 1971, to apply for Indian citizenship.

This provision has faced strong opposition from indigenous groups, who argue it encourages illegal immigration from Bangladesh and threatens their rights.

During the hearings, the Supreme Court asked the Ministry of Home Affairs to provide comprehensive data on the influx of illegal migrants into Assam and other northeastern states after March 25, 1971.

The Court also requested details on foreign tribunals and the granting of citizenship to immigrants during different timeframes.

Recognition of Assamese as a Classical Language:

The Cabinet expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for granting Assamese the status of a “Classical Language.”

This prestigious recognition acknowledges the language’s rich cultural heritage and aims to support the preservation, documentation, and digitization of ancient texts.

Additionally, it is expected to generate employment opportunities for local scholars.

Grassroots Governance Reforms:

The Cabinet approved the recommendations from the District Delimitation Commission to improve governance by redrawing the constituencies of Gaon Panchayats, Anchalik Panchayats, and Zilla Parishads. The changes are as follows:

  • Gaon Panchayats: Reduced from 2,197 to 2,193 constituencies.
  • Zilla Parishad Constituencies: Reduced from 420 to 397 constituencies.
  • Development Blocks: The number of blocks remains unchanged at 219, with 181 in general areas and 38 in Sixth Schedule areas.

Mission Basundhara 3.0:

The Cabinet approved the launch of Mission Basundhara 3.0, scheduled for October 19, 2024. This phase will build on the previous phases by further digitizing land-related services.

  • Land Reforms: Settling Bhoodan/Gramdan lands and digitizing the conversion of land patta processes.

These measures reflect Assam’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and improving governance at the grassroots level.

The event also celebrated the conclusion of the Sampoornata Abhiyan programme.

During the ceremony, the mobile common service centre (CSC) of the cooperation department was launched.

Key attendees included Yishey D Yongda, District Collector of Gyalshing, along with Munna Singh, Commandant of the 72 Bn SSB Yuksam, CS Subba, SDM Yuksam, Laden Gensapa, Joint Director of the Cooperation Department, as well as local panchayat members, the school principal, teachers, School Management Committee members, Anganwadi workers, and a large group of students.

Upon arrival, the chief guest toured stalls showcasing healthy foods organized by Self-Help Groups (SHGs), facilitated by Joint Registrar Laden Gensapa and her team.

Anganwadi workers also presented various nutritious foods along with information about the Beti Bachhao Beti Padao scheme.

Other displays included local crafts by Khechoperi Bamboo House and a health camp set up by the District Hospital Gyalshing and PHSC Thingling medical staff.

Yongda noted that many books promote self-improvement and goal-setting, inspiring healthier lifestyles and reducing the likelihood of substance abuse.

By promoting reading among youth, the school provides a powerful tool for mental stimulation, emotional support, and constructive use of time.

Additionally, she spoke about the health benefits of the Moringa plant, encouraging attendees to incorporate this superfood into their diets for a healthier lifestyle.

As part of the Sampoornata Abhiyan closing ceremony, letters of appreciation were presented to the Block Level Officers of the Aspirational Block, Chongrang, by the District Collector.
