World Health Organization Declares Mpox a Global Health Emergency

Geneva, Aug 15: The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the ongoing mpox outbreaks in Congo and other African regions a global health emergency.

With cases confirmed in over a dozen countries, the virus is now spreading among both children and adults. Despite the severity, vaccine availability on the continent remains critically low.

Earlier this week, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also labeled the mpox situation a public health emergency, reporting over 500 deaths and urging international support.

The virus has been detected in 13 countries, with Congo accounting for 96% of cases and deaths. In 2023 alone, there were more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths in the region, marking a significant surge from last year.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern about the growing threat, highlighting the potential for the virus to spread beyond Africa.

Salim Abdool Karim, an infectious diseases expert with the Africa CDC, emphasized that the new strain emerging from Congo has a 3-4% mortality rate, a sharp contrast to the 2022 global outbreak where less than 1% of those infected died.

The majority of cases in Congo involve children under 15, who also account for 85% of deaths. Experts like Jacques Alonda, an epidemiologist in Congo, are particularly worried about the spread in refugee camps, where overcrowding and limited healthcare resources increase the risk.

The WHO reported that mpox has recently been identified for the first time in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, all linked to the Congo outbreak.

In the Ivory Coast and South Africa, a less deadly version of the virus, similar to the one that spread globally in 2022, is circulating.

Despite previous global efforts, Africa remains under-resourced in terms of vaccines and treatments. Congolese officials have requested 4 million doses of the mpox vaccine, primarily for children under 18.

However, WHO’s emergency declaration alone may not be enough to prompt a swift response, with experts warning that decisive global action is needed to prevent further spread and repeat past mistakes.

Moirang, Aug 15: As India marks 78 years of Independence, the lesser-known yet historically significant town of Moirang in Manipur shines as a symbol of the nation’s freedom struggle.

This town, which houses Northeast India’s tallest flagpole, stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian National Army (INA) under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

At the heart of Moirang, the Indian National Flag soars 165 feet high, making it the tallest in the Northeast. This very ground witnessed a momentous event on April 14, 1944, when Lieutenant Colonel Shaukat Ali of the INA, under the guidance of Netaji, hoisted the Tricolor for the first time on Indian soil, signaling the dawn of freedom.

The INA Martyrs’ Memorial Complex in Moirang, located 45 km south of Imphal, stands as a tribute to the valiant soldiers of the INA.

The complex features a meticulously reconstructed version of the original INA memorial in Singapore, which was tragically destroyed by British forces in 1945.

Alongside this memorial, the complex houses a museum, library, and auditorium, all dedicated to preserving the legacy of the INA. A statue of Subhas Chandra Bose proudly stands as a reminder of his unwavering commitment to India’s freedom.

The memorial, originally inaugurated by Indira Gandhi in 1969, underwent expansion and was completed in its current form in 2005, with a total investment of Rs 6.23 crores.

Additionally, a stone monument has been erected at the historic Moirang Kangla, where Colonel S. A. Malik of the INA raised the flag of Azad Hind in April 1944.

The significance of Moirang extends beyond its borders. Close to the complex is the peace memorial at Lotpaching, established by the Japanese government, and 205 km north of Moirang in Chesezu, Nagaland, lies another monument connected to the INA.

Here, a statue of Netaji marks the last camp where he stayed for two months, further solidifying Moirang’s place in the annals of India’s struggle for independence.

The restoration and preservation of these sites by the N Biren Singh-led Manipur Government have brought them back to their former glory, ensuring that future generations remember the sacrifices made for India’s freedom.

Erui and his family expressed their gratitude, highlighting that this accomplishment brings pride to their village, district, and state.

In a related effort, a team of artisans in Ranaghat, Nadia district, West Bengal, is working to set a new Guinness World Record by creating a 125-foot Durga idol for this year’s Durga Puja.

Silchar, Aug 14: A safety advisory issued by Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Assam sparked significant backlash before being swiftly withdrawn, with critics accusing it of “misogyny” and “victim-blaming.”

The original advisory, dated August 12, was intended for female doctors, students, and staff in response to a “recent tragic and reprehensible incident” at R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata. It recommended that women “generally avoid isolated, poorly lit, and sparsely populated areas” and “refrain from leaving hostel or lodging rooms during night hours unless necessary.”

 

This guidance drew immediate criticism from students and medical professionals, who found it troubling.

The Junior Doctors’ Association of Silchar Medical College denounced the advisory as “disturbing” and instead called for enhanced campus security, better lighting, and dedicated facilities for doctors.

Social media users criticized the advisory as “misogynistic,” arguing that it imposed undue restrictions on women rather than addressing broader safety issues.

In response to the backlash, the college administration issued a revised notice on August 14, stating: “As NMC has issued an advisory vide no. N-16021/33/2024-IT-NMC(8291616), dt. 13.08.2024, the advisory issued by Silchar Medical College & Hospital administration vide no. SMC/11782, dt. 12.08.2024 stands cancelled.”

The notice further clarified that a new advisory would be issued soon, in line with NMC norms and government directives.

This incident follows the death of a postgraduate trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College on August 9, which is still under investigation and has reignited debates on safety measures and working conditions in medical institutions across India.

Guwahati, Aug 14: On August 14, junior doctors and students of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Guwahati, staged a protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal.

Dr. Kumarjyoti Deka, President of the Gauhati Medical College Junior Doctor Association, stated that the protest was in solidarity with ongoing demonstrations nationwide.

“This is a solidarity protest. Protests have been happening in West Bengal for the past 3-4 days and across India. Our protest supports those efforts. Our colleague at RG Kar Medical College was assaulted and brutally murdered while on duty. We are here to oppose this heinous act,” Dr. Deka said.

Dr. Deka also urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government to take swift action and ensure the accused are brought to justice.

“We request the West Bengal Government and CBI to apprehend the accused as soon as possible and ensure they are punished according to the law,” he added.

Meanwhile, a team of senior CBI officers arrived in Kolkata this morning to investigate the rape and murder case.

The CBI’s involvement follows the Calcutta High Court’s order to transfer the case to the central agency.

According to officials, the team, including medical and forensic experts, will visit the seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where the trainee doctor’s body was discovered on August 9.

Itanagar, Aug 13: A 600-foot-long tricolour was paraded through Seppa, East Kameng, Arunachal Pradesh, as part of the Har Ghar Tiranga Program.

Over 2,000 students from schools across the East Kameng district participated in the event, which was attended by East Kameng DC Sachin Rana, Arunachal Home Minister Mama Natung, MLA Seppa East Ealling Tallang, and Chayangtajo MLA Hayeng Mangfi.

The rally, led by State Home Minister Mama Natung, marked India’s 77th Independence Day and saw thousands of participants walking through the streets of Seppa, chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.”

Agartala, Aug 12: Tripura State Jamiat-Ulama-i-Hind has strongly condemned the reported attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh and called for their protection.

In a statement, Mufti Tayebur Rahman, President of the Tripura State Jamiat-Ulama-i-Hind, expressed concerns over incidents occurring after Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure on August 5, 2024.

He reported allegations of violent attacks on police, journalists, and looting and arson targeting Hindu minorities, including assaults on temples.

Despite efforts by the Muslim majority, including madrassa students, to protect minority homes and religious sites, there are ongoing reports of targeted violence.

Rahman emphasized that such acts must be condemned and urged for the security of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.

NIRF Rankings 2024: Hindu College Ranked Best in India, Miranda House Secures Second Place—Full List of Top Colleges

New Delhi, Aug 12: Hindu College, New Delhi, has secured the top spot in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2024 for colleges, released on Monday.

Miranda House, which was ranked first last year, has moved to the second position this year. St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, holds the third spot in the college rankings.

In the previous year’s rankings, Miranda House, Delhi, led as the top college in India, followed by Hindu College, Delhi, and Presidency College, Chennai. This year, however, Hindu College has taken the lead.

The NIRF Rankings 2024 were released by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in the presence of key dignitaries, including Professor Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairperson of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and Sanjay Murthy, Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education.

This year’s rankings expanded to 16 categories, adding state, skill, and open universities to the existing list. Other categories ranked include overall, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation.

IIT Madras retained its top position in the overall category for the sixth consecutive year, while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, was named the best university.

Additionally, IIT Madras continued its reign as the best engineering college for the ninth year in a row. In the management category, IIM-Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta were ranked among the top five.

The NIRF ranking framework assesses institutions based on five key parameters: teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. This marks the ninth edition of the NIRF Rankings.

Mamata Banerjee’s Ultimatum to CBI if Police Fail to Solve Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case

Kolkata, Aug 12: Amid ongoing protests over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a stern warning to the police on Monday.

She announced that the case would be handed over to the CBI if the police fail to solve it by Sunday, August 18.

Describing the incident as “extremely painful” and “shocking,” Banerjee noted that the victim’s parents suspect that an insider might be involved in the crime, apart from the main accused.

“I have instructed the police to investigate anyone under suspicion, including the victim’s friends and others,” she stated.

Banerjee added that a dog squad, video department, and forensic team have been deployed for the investigation. She emphasized that if Kolkata Police is unable to solve the case by the deadline, it will be transferred to the CBI.

Banerjee also called for fast-tracking the case to ensure a swift judicial process, expressing her shock that the crime occurred despite the presence of nurses and security personnel in the hospital.

In response to the incident, the principal, Head of Department, Medical Superintendent cum Vice Principal (MSVP), and the ASP of the hospital have been removed from their positions.

The trainee doctor was found on August 9 in a seminar hall at the hospital with injury marks on her body. An autopsy confirmed that she was raped before being murdered. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested on August 10 and has been remanded to 14-day police custody.

Although Roy was not officially associated with RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, he was known to frequent the premises.

Meanwhile, four petitions have been filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking a CBI investigation into the case, with the court set to hear the matter on Tuesday, August 13.

Banerjee had earlier stated that the accused would face the death penalty if necessary and urged for the case to be directed to a fast-track court to provide the victim’s family with speedy justice.

In response to the incident, thousands of doctors and post-graduate students across the country held strikes in protest.

The Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) of Delhi’s AIIMS put forward six demands, including a CBI inquiry, strict action against the culprits, and adequate compensation for the victim’s family.

The celebration will continue with a ‘Tiranga Concert’ at Vanapa Hall on Tuesday.
